Background

On June 13, 2021, a photo (which led to more) was posted on the social media network called Reddit, and the /r/UFOs ‘subreddit.’

The Black Vault reached out to the ‘witness’ who posted it, and began a deep dive into the origin of where they came from, and attempted to piece together the full story.

What resulted was a bit of a rabbit hole. This now smells like a hoax after some deep digging. There were obvious signs up front, but my approach has always been to exhaust all possibilities.

NOTE: I feel I may be a bit more neutral than is warranted on this. After this video was uploaded, and the article was programmed, I made a discovery which slipped by me prior to creating this.

The key element in all this that I missed until just before publishing, is this fact: In CAM01877.jpg (raw files available at the link above), the metadata states the photo was taken at 8:26pm. The “identical” photo labeled as CAM01878.jpg which did not have the lens flares, was taken at 8:25pm, one minute earlier. Sequentially in the file naming structure vs. the time stamps; they are reversed. The camera would have named the 8:25pm photo as *1877 and the 8:26pm photo as *1878. I feel that may be the deciding factor in labeling this a hoax. However, I opted not to record the entire video again and re-edit it all, but rather, post this addendum and show you all the evidence as complete as I could make it. Plus, the journey to get there!

In addition to the above, there are too many other red flags to dismiss. When I recorded the video, I tried to stay neutral giving way to long-shot possibilities, but possibilities none-the-less. However, right before publishing everything, I made additional discoveries. 

Ideally, I’d delete it all, and have a different approach. Re-edit, re-do, and re-upload. However, I want to show you all the investigative techniques to exhaust all possibilities. Sure, we can dismiss more easily. I just opt not to. What you see in the above links is why…

Sometimes, we just need to keep digging despite having the deep down feeling on what the overall outcome will be. The more evidence we collect; the better we are for the next one.

UPDATE: Shortly after I posted this investigation, the Reddit user /u/Munchizmo deleted their account after having it for 10 years. This is another highly suspect action, and more in line with what I would expect from a hoaxer.

Moral of the story: Always follow the evidence, and always keep pushing.

Metadata Breakdowns

Another complete red flag is the fact that the photograph dimensions for all photos was 960×720, taken by a LG LDC-F20. However, the LDC-F20 shot a resolution of 640×480. A special thanks to Mick West for notating that discrepancy.

During the research phase, these documents were brought in from the University, but did not make it into the final cut of the show.

Background

The following case was originally submitted to the Black Vault and was  assigned to TBV Investigations’ Researcher Richard Kidd for analysis.

Witness  Testimony

The following was submitted by the witness on December 21, 2017.

“I was driving, overnight, from Tucson to Southern California on Highway 8 near Yuma, Az. There was NO traffic at this time of night. The sky was black with millions of stars by which I was in awe! I was observing lights to my left that I believed was the border: high light poles with floodlights that shined down to the ground. No car lights, no people. Terrain was low, no hills, a few cacti. (I was able to stare at the sky in that direction for many seconds at a time since there was no traffic and the road was straight ahead as far as as I could see.) As I looked at the stars I noticed a large black object blackened out the stars as it moved in the same direction as I was traveling. I could see it was huge, and triangular in shape from the way it blackened out the stars. (Since then I’ve seen film clips, especially in the Midwest, that showed these same type objects.) It was moving slowly what seemed to be along the border fence. My speed was much faster, and in fact I soon lost sight as I “outran” it. My “viewing” time was probably a good 5 to 7 minutes though. Long enough to see a good description of the object! I never saw anything, or read anything about the incident. I don’t know if it was a UFO or a reverse engineered American ship. I DO know I could hear no motor which would have been necessary because of its size.I would guestimate it was larger than any aircraft known at that time.I have no doubts about what I saw. Not much more I can say. No need to interview. I just thought you might add this to any other file about sightings in this area around this time.”

The Analysis

I have attempted to call the witness a couple times. I have left voice mail messages and I have not received a return call. I am assuming because, in his report he states that no interview is necessary and he just wanted to include his sighting in The Black Vault’s case files, if any other individuals have reported sightings in the same location.  This case is archived here for reference.

Conclusion

I am recommending that this case be closed due to lack of evidence other than the statement by the witness.

      I was recently scanning in documents from the Project Blue Book collection I received a few years ago to share on The Black Vault (see From The Desks Of Project Book). This allowed me to take the time to closer inspect some of the items that previously, I had only glanced at. The following three-page, hand written letter was stapled together and folded among a stack of other correspondences.

      The letter was written to Project Blue Book in 1969 from a then 71 year old man named James T. Kirk. It was regarding an event he had witnessed in the 1920’s while walking to work in Phoenix, Arizona. I looked for an official case for the story in the Blue Books archive. The case list from May 1969 showed an “additional reported sighting” non-case, Red Bluff, California May 24. The letter was sent from there dated May 21.

The letter reads:

May 21, 1969

Project Blue Book

Dear Sirs,

                I have just finished reading your 1969 True Report on Flying Saucers No 3. It has brought to mind, something I saw back in the twenties. I worked at two different times between 1925 & 1929 for John F. Barber Producer Co. on Jefferson St. (ave) near Central Ave in Phoenix Arizona. We started work on the 3 – 4 – or 5 o’clock shifts. I lived about seven blocks east of the Produce house.

                On the 3 or 4 o’clock A.M. shift one morning when I was about half way to the job there was a sudden very bright flash of light which held. I faced the north, and at about 2 and some ten degrees north of where I stood I saw a sphere-shaped circle of blue fire. I have never been able to remember if I heard an explosion but would have if it had been loud.

                It looked as though a large cotton rope about one foot thick and formed in this sphere shape was saturated with gas and was burning with a blue green flame. The circle could have been from 20 ft to 200 ft in diameter, but it appeared to be very high. Of course, it had to be close enough to earth that it could get oxygen to burn. I walked backward the 3 or 4 blocks on to the store watching the burning circle. This walk probably took six to eight minutes and when I went indoors the circle was still there, was still burning, but not so brightly. It appeared to have turned over 2 or 3 degrees to the left. There was no wind, no clouds a perfect clear night.

 I believe it was a meteor, but do meteors burn that long after an explosion? What kind of fuel was burning and why wasn’t it all consumed at once. Some years ago I asked Mr. (possibly) Nininger of Sedona Arizona (meteorologist). His reply was I had seen a meteor fall. This never satisfied me, hence this letter.

Sorry I don’t know the year, the month, season or day. I looked for comments in the Phoenix papers and talked to other men. It appears there were no other witnesses.

The Investigation

         Internet searches with the date and witness’ name revealed a one-line description on several sites. They mentioned a person named Kirk that saw a nocturnal light in Phoenix in 1920. The source was book by Eberhart, George M titled A Geo-Bibliography of Anomalies. Unable to find his book, I reached out to the author to ask him his source. Mr. Eberhart informed me that all he knew about the incident was that the observer was named James T. Kirk, and he saw a nocturnal light in the 1920s in Phoenix near Barber’s Produce Market. His source was: Jerome Clark and Lucius Farish, “UFOs of the Roaring 20s,” Saga UFO Report, Fall 1975, pp. 48, 60.

         He no longer had the issue, and I suspected it would be difficult to find. He was correct, I have spent a few weeks looking all over the web for the issue with no luck. I don’t know for certain whether Blue Book shared the information, or the witness contacted someone else. It’s even possible that J. Allen Hynek had a copy of the letter. This copy appears to be an original.

      I have no idea if Blue Book ever got back with Mr. Kirk and there is not much that can be done to research this apart from looking for other witnesses. Newspaper searches from the time showed no other mention of the event. With the name of the witness matching that of a fictional character, I researched it through census records and found him to be real.

       I myself enjoy reading about old cases like this, especially regarding sightings before rockets, jets and satellites. They are even better when sketches are involved.

Background

The following case was submitted to The Black Vault / TBV Investigations. However, after numerous attempts by team member Rob Mercer to contact the witness by phone and email, they did not return any messages.

We decided to archive the case, in hopes the witness may reach out in the future, or corroborating testimony can be discovered.

Witness Testimony

The following was submitted by the witness (unedited):

I joined the Air Force in February, 1996. After basic training, I was sent to Ft. Huachuca, Arizona (an Army base) for more training. I don’t know the exact day, but it had to be between May 15, 1996-July, 1996 (the length of time I was stationed there).

We had just finished our training for the day, which was around 3:00 pm, and were in formation for our usual daily update. One particular day, we were told that the base was on lockdown.

No one was allowed to leave the base. We naturally asked why, and were given no explanation. Since we were all stuck on the base, we spent most of the evening in the day room, where there were lounge chairs and a TV. Later that night, on the local evening news out of Tucson, there was a story about a UFO seen in the area. A large (at least the size of a football field), black, slow moving, triangular shaped object was spotted in the sky, very close to the base (SHOWING UP IN BROAD DAYLIGHT!)

A policeman took video of it on his dashcam, and followed it for MANY miles (north to northeast), to around the Scottsdale area, where it disappeared. This sighting had to have lasted a few hours due to the distance from where we were (southern Arizona), to the area where it disappeared (and it’s slow speed). I’ve looked online and never seen that video, or even clips of it.

So, even though it made the news, we saw the short video clip, no one ever spoke of it again. I would think that the policeman (or sheriff) that followed it would remember it, or the video would have somehow gotten leaked on YouTube considering how interesting it was! I’ve seen the video of the Phoenix lights, and this was NOT the same thing.

I’m baffled that a story like this would just disappear! Added note: Ft. Huachuca was testing drones at the time, so we were used to seeing test aircraft in the sky. The fact that they locked down the base leads me to believe it wasn’t ours!

Witness Summary

This video was made with a Luna Optics color night vision camera LN-DM50-HRSD.

It is 5X but can go to 20X. This was approx. at 9:00 on July 4th, 2015 at the Sabino Canyon parking lot situated in the northeast edge of Tucson. I’ve always left the time stamp of my videos at its original 2011 so ignore that. The sky was completely overcast over the Catalina Mtns. The small dots you see on the screen are normal for night vision cameras and are not stars in the sky.

The very first couple of seconds shows some odd lights in the right of the frame. Those are the radio towers on the mountain out of focus thus making them look odd.

There were a few cars coming and and going out of the parking lot and they account for some of the light shifts. Unfortunately I zoomed in too much and it destroyed the clarity of the video but it still captures the amazing event that we witnessed.

There are a couple of times I adjust the focus and it makes the 3 lights of the UFO seem to morph but that is only, again, me focusing. The main 3 lights stayed distinct in the sky and only look like they become one light and then back to 3 because of my tinkering.

The eyewitness also submitted a corroborating video, from a friend, who also shot the same event. Here is the video:

Note from The Black Vault

After seeing the radio towers in the daylight video, I went ahead and asked the witness for clarification, to ensure the lights were not around the radio tower itself.  This was his response:

The radio towers are approx. 8 to 10 miles away from where we videoed. The UFO had to have been at least 30 miles away to be in that good of a focus since airplanes 8 to 10 away require me to adjust my focus. The radio tower lights are way out of focus and yet the UFO is in focus since I leave my lens at a setting that on this particular camera has stars, satellites and far off planes in focus without me having to change the focal setting. The radio tower light can only be seen in the first couple seconds of the video to the far right edge of the frame. Hope that helps but if not please ask for more clarification.

Details on the Location

The following was submitted by the eyewitness, to better explain the location of the sighting:

The radio towers are on Mt. Bigelow that just a part of the greater Catalina Range and the towers are now confirmed to be about 8 miles from the parking lot at Sabino. Panoramio – Photo of Mt. Bigelow Broadcast Tower Site, East of Tucson, Az Bigelow is just to the left of Willow Canyon on the following map and the pointer at the end of the red line is likely where the UFO was way out in the middle of desert wilderness. It may have been closer but it was certainly beyond the mountain range. The line in the photo at the bottom right begins at the Sabino Canyon parking lot and goes to where the UFO approx. was at the pointer.

Case Closed

On October 12, 2015, I received the below letter from the witness. There has been much speculation and investigation, and it is possible, though he won’t say with absolute certainty, that this is resolved. The letter read as follows:

My name is Jennifer Andrews and I thought you might be interested in some photos I took of an object, last March 4th, that I spotted going over our house.  To give you a little background on these photos, this is what happened:   My husband and I were sitting out on our patio in Mesa, which faces West towards Phoenix (and it may be important for you to know that our house is in the McKellips Rd/Mesa Dr area AND is below a regular flight pattern for planes coming into and leaving Sky Harbor).  During the time of this incident, the planes were flying INTO Sky Harbor so they were headed West).  I suddenly noticed a small odd shaped object that was coming from the West and heading East (or slightly North East) and even though it looked small, I knew that it had to be flying at a much higher altitude than the airplanes that were coming into Sky Harbor for landing, based on the comparisons in sizes. Even though it was difficult to see this object closer, I realized it was NOT an airplane AT ALL!  It was almost oval in shape, but a wider-type oval and it was clearly gaining altitude as it was approaching from the West and moving overhead.  It also appeared that the craft was rotating itself, as it moved forward,  not only based on simply watching it visually, but also based on a light that seems to be attached to it – one moment you could see one light and the next you could see two (both at opposite ends of the wide oval).

I had grabbed my camera as soon as I realized this was NOT an airplane or any other type of military aircraft that I had ever seen (I had a career in the Aerospace industry and was familiar with various types of military aircraft such as C17, F18, etc.).  I began to take photos as fast as I could, but because it was flying so much higher than the airplanes, I had to get it into my viewfinder on my camera and on top of that, I had just broken my shoulder and had emergency surgery 2 months earlier and I had limited mobility in that shoulder, so I had to get into some strange positions in order to keep taking photos as quick as I could. 

The original photos I took, were taken with my camera set at the highest zoom level the camera had, so to look at them as originally taken, they looked almost like specks. But when looking at them after I had taken them, I could zoom in 5X to see the object more closely.  I was then able to resize that enlarged frame so I could once again zoom in another 5X.  I realize you lose clarity but in doing this I was pretty amazed at what I saw and realized this was most definitely something NOT of this world. I DO have the original photos on my camera that I took that day before enlarging them so if you need to, I can show you the photos as they were initially taken.   If you are interested in seeing ALL the photos, or if you have any questions for me, feel free to let me know and I would be happy to answer anything you might have to ask me or to send you all the photos.

Date of sighting: August 27, 2015

Location of sighting: Scottsdale, Arizona, USA

Eyewitness states: Looking out living room sliding glass window from my family’s house at the above event location and saw three pulsating lights in a equilateral triangular formation hovering over one of our neighbor’s homes.

One of the lights began to move towards the west at a fast rate of speed while the other two remained stationary for an additional 1 to 2 minutes minutes.

Then the second light began to move towards the east at a slower rate of speed compared to the first object that moved.The central light remained stationary for 15 minutes then faded out of view.

The first thought of what the objects were was that I was witnessing a re-occurrence of the “Phoenix Lights”.

The video shows how I lost sight of the object. I didn’t have any feelings or emotions when I saw the lights either during or after the sighting.

I was shutting down my computer when the motion detection alarm sounded on my computer. I checked the camera video but there was nothing on it. Checked the still photos and that was when I found the images.

At first I thought it was a firefly or something of that matter, but realized that fireflies don’t leave trails like in the photo. I didn’t pay much attention until it showed up the second and third night.

That was when I thought it was something different. I was not able to observe it firsthand, I only saw it in the photos. After the second night I thought it was kind of spooky.

I was sitting on my property in the Aquarius Mountains south of Interstate 40 at 42 hundred ft. elevation trying to capture lightning in the distance at dusk.

Using a three second shutter speed with the lens fully zoomed out and pausing about two seconds between shots I took a series of seven pictures each with the mysterious lights in them.

The camera was on a tripod and was never repositioned for the entire series.

The lights had to have been blinking for there not to be a trail using a three second exposure. The lights were not observed while taking the pictures; only after loading them on my computer.

There is a pattern to the lights across the seven pictures. Zooming in on the lights on my computer they appear rectangular.

Description (In Witness’s Own Words): In September 1974, I applied for emergency leave to drive to Alabama to bring my wife and older son home to California. The evening I left San Diego, I drove east past El Cajon and was following what seemed like the quickest path on State Highway 10, now I-10. I arrived in Phoenix, Arizona just before midnight and proceeded to fuel my car. Once that was done, I again headed East on highway 10.

Approximately 5 miles after getting on the highway, I noticed a bright light positioned at about the 3 “o” clock position above the horizon, north and east of my position. I left Phoenix right at 12 am in the morning.

By now from my previous event, I am pretty spooked by lights in the sky of any kind. I kept trying to focus on my driving, but found myself somewhat pre-occupied with this strange light. It kind of looked like an automobile with it’s head lights on high beam positioned on a small mesa, about 3 miles from my position. It’s like I just blinked my eyes, and out of the corner of my eye I see what appears to be a city limit sign going by. I missed the name, but felt somewhat disoriented, continued to the next off ramp.

There is the name Gila Bend. At this point I pulled my car over to side of the road, wondering what is going on. I look at my watch and it is now a little after 5:30 am in the morning, I am in Gila Bend, Arizona and my last conscious thought is of the light, at 12:10 am outside Phoenix, Arizona.

I couldn’t believe I had driven over 200 miles and not remembered having done so. I know you’ve heard of this stuff before, really have you heard this one. I check my gas gauge and it read full. Not believing what I was seeing, I drove to the nearest gas station and proceeded to fill the tank. It took less than 1/2 of one gallon to fill the tank. I have never before or since been able to equal gas mileage like that, although I wish I could.

End of Story – Not Quite To this day, I have had NO CONSCIOUS MEMORIES of the event.

Investigator’s Notes: This is the second sighting that I have received from this witness.  This experience is intriguing given that the witness lost 5 hours of time after sighting the light and then did not use any gas in the nearly 200 mile trip. 

What really happened?  I plan to conduct some more interviews with this witness.  He is still shaken from this and other experiences that he says that he has had.

Boothill Graveyard was opened in Tombstone Arizona in 1879. Most of it’s occupants suffered violent or un-expected deaths with their boots on, this is the reason why the early pioneers named it Boothill.

Some people believe that ghosts are spirits of people that died unexpectedly, violently, and/or at the hands of others, gunfights, hangings, etc. Whether this is your belief or not, PLEASE LET ME WARN YOU…the following photos are not only strange and unexplainable even to paranormal experts, they can be down right scary!!

This is the photo that changed my opinion about ghost photo’s!! I personally shot this photograph of my friend in Boothill Graveyard… We had it developed at Thrifty Drug Store and no one tampered with it! The picture was shot in black & white, because my friend wanted old west looking pictures of himself dressed up in my 1880 period clothes.

All I can say is… “I know their was no other person in this photograph when I shot it, especially some guy holding a knife! Thats right folks, if you look carefully the person in the background appears to be holding a knife!”

Look just to the right of my friend and you’ll see a person which appears to have no legs or is coming out of a grave! Some people think it looks like a little boy, some say an old man, or even an old lady, what do you think?

Interesting facts:.. Boothill Graveyard appears to be really over grown in this photo. Two weeks after this photo was shot we re-staged the photo by lining up two people in both positions. When we did this… you could clearly see the legs of the person standing in the back. The bushes in Boothill are not so thick that you can’t see through them. And once again, this IS NOTa staged photo, or designed by the computer, the figure in the background also appears on the negative.

I don’t know about you… but the blown up image of this unexplained figure holding the knife gives most people the chills!!

If you’re not convinced that something is weird here, look at my friends shadow in the photo above, it appears to be going back slightly to the right of him. The figure in the back should have the same shadow, but it doesn’t!

Can you see the knife? We thought this was a tie at first, but after further review, it appears to be a knife! The knife is in a vertical position, the tip is located just below the figures right collar, can you see it?

Description:
The witness says that he was watching a video one night in February of 2007. Something on the video made him feel compelled to go outdoors. He felt that he was being watched. He went outside (at his residence) at about 11 PM MST. The next thing that he remembers is talking to his mother in the kitchen of their house at 3 PM the next afternoon. He said that he remembered nothing from 11 PM the previous night. His mother had apparently asked him what he wanted to eat at 3 PM the next day and he recalls nothing before then. He said that went to school that day, but has no recollection of being in school. He said that he has had some flashbacks of “bright lights” and hands moving across these bright lights. He waited to report the incident because he was afraid of ridicule. He said that he was 16 years old.

Investigator’s Notes: The witness seemed sincere in his report yet he would not talk about the video that he watched right before the incident occurred. He said that he was physically and emotionally healthy and wanted to explore his experience with a professional therapist. His story needs to be treated with caution because he won’t discuss the video that he watched. This seems to indicate some unreasonable “paranoia.” His experience also may be medically related (e.g seizure) although he said that he has not been treated for any physical or mental ailments. I plan to have another investigator interview this witness. Any updates will be posted.
