On June 13, 2019, the WayBack Machine took a snapshot of the WSDOT website that streams this webcam. Here, you can see the same area that is not covered in snow, and the figure is still there.

The Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting occurred on June 24, 1947, when private pilot Kenneth Arnold claimed that he saw a string of nine, shiny unidentified flying objects flying past Mount Rainier at speeds that Arnold estimated at a minimum of 1,200 miles an hour (1,932 km/hr). This was the first post-War sighting in the United States that garnered nationwide news coverage and is credited with being the first of the modern era of UFO sightings, including numerous reported sightings over the next two to three weeks. Arnold’s description of the objects also led to the press quickly coining the terms flying saucer and flying disc as popular descriptive terms for UFOs.

Heifer, bull mysteriously killed in SW Washington

NASELLE, Wash. — Two cattle killings and mutilations have been discovered recently in rural Southwest Washington.

On Aug. 29 Deep River resident Warren Anderson found one of his heifers had been killed and its tongue and heart cut out. The killing occurred within 120 yards of his parents’ house in Naselle, Wash., where Anderson has been pasturing a small herd of beef cattle. Anderson believes the 8-month-old Angus-Hereford cross may have been killed sometime the previous evening.

“I was over here Sunday and it hadn’t been done then, unless it was done Sunday evening. It looked pretty fresh on Tuesday, so I’m thinking it was killed Monday evening,” Anderson said.

On Aug. 19, Grays River resident Dan Zimmerman discovered the carcass of a young bull he was pasturing in a field. Its tongue had also been removed. The young bull was found lying in the fenced field not far from State Route 4.

This is the second time in two years this has occurred to one of his cattle, Zimmerman said.

“Both times, the animal’s tongue had been removed,” he said. “The first time, it occurred in September, around the time of the equinox.”

Anderson reported the killing of his heifer to the Pacific County Sheriff’s Office and a deputy responded to the scene.

However, by Sept. 1 the incident report had not yet been completed and, as a result, the office was unable to comment on the cause of death.

Anderson said he believes the heifer had been shot and the bullet removed. Zimmerman said he did not know what caused his bull’s death.

Influenced by my interview with retired police officer Lt. Tim McMillan, I looked up some cases I could investigate through state level “Sunshine Laws.” This was one of the first cases I found, and decided to take a stab at it.

I believe after seeing the documents, it is clear that this was someone who came onto the property, shot the cow, and decided they wanted to cut out part of the bovine’s insides. However, this was a great lesson to see how the state level laws work, and what you can get. 

After filing the records request to the Pacific County Public Records Center, I received the police documents regarding the case, along with the original 911 calls. I decided to redact myself some additional information, including personal addresses and phone numbers. I felt despite it being public record, as a courtesy to the ranch owner, I would not include that.

Conclusion

I believe after reading the police report, it can be determined this was not an anomalous event, but rather someone who went on the property and shot the cow, then decided to mutilate it, for whatever reason. Although the bullet wound was referenced at the end of the newspaper article, this was a bit of a test to see how much can be obtained via a state level request.  Despite no anomalous evidence, this was a good lesson in how it all works! I have a feeling there will be much more to come in regards to these cases.

The following case was submitted to The Black Vault / TBV Investigations on December 18, 2017.  

Witness Testimony

“Saw triangle shape with lights around the edges floating across the sky in the direction of Reagan airport.

The craft was as large as a football field and just floated silently across the sky.

I must admit that I was using my night vision goggles which is why no one else seemed to be disturbed or seemed to say or notice anything. Now I know there are giant flying triangles and what they are I have no idea.

One more note is that this was during the nuclear summit at the Pentagon.”

The Analysis

Based on the witness description, the event took place on March 15, 2016, and stated this was during the “nuclear summit” at the Pentagon.  However, the summit did not actually begin until March 31st (2 weeks later) and ended on April 1, 2016.

(Please note: we do not believe this error was submitted to us maliciously and is only noted due to the information and possible identity of the UFO below)

Upon investigation, it’s possible that aerial surveillance drones or other aircraft were patrolling the area prior to the summit, which could account for an increase in air traffic and therefore may account for the UFO seen on night vision.

Though a triangular shaped drone or surveillance aircraft does seem unlikely, it’s possible that through the use of night vision goggles — the object may have one shape, but appear on night vision as another, given the right circumstances. 

Given the location of the UFO, according to the witness, was in the direction of Reagan airport, it is possible this is simply a commercial aircraft, as well.  

Without an exact time stamp, it would be impossible to round down a potential flight number that could account for the craft seen through the night vision goggles.

Conclusion

Without further evidence, in the form of a photograph or video (or exact time), it is hard to determine the actual identity of the UFO.

Background

On December 21, 2017, the witness sent in the following report to The Black Vault / TBV Investigations. It has only been slightly edited for ease of reading, but context did not change:

“I do not remember the date nor the specific time. It was probably in 2012 or 2013 in winter or early spring. I know how that sounds.

I only talked to several people at the time, but I was expecting to hear reports so did not say much.

I never did hear about anyone else seeing what I saw. The reason I am reporting this is to get some answers on what this may have been, or even getting information on anyone seeing something similar.

Last year (Jan. 2016) I did see a picture posted on the internet THIS looks a lot like what I saw (see picture I sent) again this is not a picture I took, BUT the Glowing Engines and spacing of them remind me strongly of what I saw. WHAT I SAW…

I was relaxing in my hot tub in my back yard. It was dark maybe 9 ish Winter or early spring. NO leaves on the trees. I looked up for some reason. There were three soundless craft following each other flying towards the south maybe 500 (approx.) feet overhead.

All I could see were the two glowing orange engines (on each craft) I did not see any “body” of the crafts only the round glowing (what I assume were engines) I truly wish I could give a better estimate of the distance and or size but all I can say is I could distinctly see the roundness… something like you would see of a approaching car with large lights maybe 1/4 mile away, but not as bright as I said “glowing”.

I assumed they were some kind on UAV or small craft, but I did not hear anything nor see anything other that the glowing orange (engines) I was fixated on.

When I first looked up they had passed my location, and I was looking at the back of the last craft. Flight speed was not fast. I watched for what may have been a min or two. as they flew down the valley. I watched till it was just a point source of light, then gone.

One other thing I did notice was that I could see the craft move in relation to the others as you would expect planes to fly …they seemed to bank right and left a small amount and you could see this in relation to the other craft.

I would not be too surprised to find out that it was some kind of experimental craft. But the picture I sent is the only time I have ever heard of this kind of sighting.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me a call sometime and tell me this has been reported before. I do have to admit that not remembering the specifics (time/date) is strange…but that is the only thing I am not sure about. Thanks”

The Analysis

The reported observation of possible UFOs has no definite date: Single event on a night in winter or spring of 2012 to 2013 over the town of Tonasket, WA. This is a small town of slightly over 1,000 population in a remote are Okanogan County in Washington State, on Highway 97 just south of the Canadian border. 

There were three unidentified aircraft that appeared to be in formation. The witness observed them flying away from him. He believed he was looking at the engines of the craft from the rear. He observed three pairs of round, circular glowing lights that were flying in formation at a distance.

The objects flew in one direction at a constant speed.

On 01/07/2018 I called the witness and left a message on his voicemail requesting contact about his report to The Black Vault. At about 1230 hours on the same date he called back, and we discussed his sighting for about 30 minutes.

The witness confirmed that he does not remember the precise date of the event, other than stating that it occurred one night in winter or spring of 2012 or 2013 at about 2100 – 2200 hours. No written notes were made, and no photographs were obtained.

We discussed the photo he submitted. He admitted that he does not know that the aircraft he observed had the same shape as shown in the photo, only that the two side-by-side blobs of light were of similar appearance to what he observed.  There was no sound, but he admits that he really doesn’t know the altitude of these aircraft. 

Further, the three pairs of exhaust lights he observed rolled slightly left and right like they were course-correcting. The aircraft flew on a straight course. He is not certain of the distance. He estimated ¼ mile away in the report. He said ½ mile during our discussion. He admits he is not certain of the distance.  He raised the possibility that they were some type of drone aircraft.

The Conclusion

There is not enough information available to make positive determination of what the witness observed. However, it very likely the origin of these lights is man-made craft using jet engines.

No further information related to this event is likely to become available.

Hi John,
4 of us were at Takhlakh Lake 8 miles west of Mt. Adams on 7/20/17. ECETI is 25 miles south of the mountain for contrast. 2 of us had Luna Optics night vision cameras on tripods with monitors. We both felt oddly antsy and “J” (who would like to remain anonymous) said he thought a UFO would come from the right, hover over the mountain and then descend. He had never said such a thing in the past.

I then said that for a good UFO video to be taken it would have to be just after sunset when to the eye it would be very dark but for our cameras the mountain would still be in plain view. I noticed a bright light over the mountain about 20 degrees in the sky and mentioned it to others and then I noticed it was moving. I had to turn on my monitor and camera plus hit record and by that time the UFO was nearly down. James bypassed the monitor turn on and went straight to the eyepiece and thus got some good footage although slightly shaky due to using the eyepiece.

We did not notice the 2nd UFO to the right until seeing the video and its descending on the same trajectory at the same speed. The ISS was not in the sky at the time according to Heaven’s Above. The time was between 9:30 and 10:00 PM. The time stamp on the video is the factory setting since setting the time on a Luna is a pain and most people don’t do it. 

James has made a rather stunning video for YouTube with his own music and photos. The airplane segment was captured a few minutes before the UFO footage and shows the contrast in size of a large plane and this huge light. I believe the light is pulsating at times but its difficult to tell with the slight camera movement. Thanks, John. —Tom Sanger Tucson, Az.

Description: A man was outside having a cigarette and saw two groups of orange orbs to the west over the Pacific Ocean. There were two orbs to the south and 6 or 7 to the west.

(The orbs looked like a constellation.)

The orbs appeared to be hovering. Then 3 of the orbs went into a triangular formation. The witness then went inside to get his cell phone. He came and took a video. At this time another orange orb approached at a rapid speed from the north.

Skies were clear and there was little wind at the time of the sighting.

Note from UFOs NorthWest: The orbs ARE NOT CHINESE LANTERNS. They do not flicker and also the movement in different directions would eliminate Chinese Lanterns as an explanation.

Description: Hi, I live in Olalla, WA on the water. I see quite a bit of military aircraft that fly between Bremerton & JBLM (Joint Base Lewis-McChord) Air Force Base. I saw several big helicopters fly over yesterday & a fighter jet flew over around 5 PM tonight.

At 8:21 tonight I saw 2 sets of 3 lights blinking together over where the fighter jet went earlier today. I grabbed my cell phone & got some not so great pictures & video.

Look at the middle of the video.

Note from UFOs NorthWest: It is difficult to determine the background of the video. I don’t believe that the lights were ground lights as they were blinking. The photo above clearly shows airborne lights.

The photo taken of the actual background view where video was taken supports the fact that the lights were airborne.

Description: I came home from work and was walking toward my apartment after parking my car. I saw two lights in the sky moving from the east. I took some pictures and then the lights disappeared.

Update – February 3, 2016 – Response From Witness Regarding Submission of Additional Photos: So sorry for the late response. I have been very sick with the flu and was recently hospitalized for it.

So I looked on your site and you put the green kind of boxy looking UFO up, but not the purple one. I tried to find the original of the purple, but may have accidently erased it. (I was transferring pictures from one laptop to a newer laptop & I think I lost some pictures in the process.) However, with that being said, I do appreciate the comment on your site that said you didn’t think it was a fabricated photo.

Yes, I absolutely did crop the picture because I could barely see it. But I never do anything else and I would never send you any hoaxed picture. Your way too smart for that! You have been dealing with this subject for a long time now and I’m quite sure you could pick up the fakes fairly quickly! I was surprised I didn’t see the purple one on your site!

To me, the purple was far more interesting than the green one and you also said I sent you two pictures but only one had a picture on it. I didn’t remember sending a second picture.

Maybe I did, but I wouldn’t want to send you blank pictures. In searching for my original, I found other UFO pictures I took all in the same month. I have attached several pictures and if you find any you are interested in, I could send in an official report through your site. Many of the pictures are completely unedited, some not even cropped.

I am still looking for the original to the purple UFO, but I did find the original of the green one you posted on your site. It is attached along with the other pictures.

Hanford, WA sighting of Large Orange Objects

Background: 2 Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) Officers saw bright orange lights for around 50 seconds between 9:52 and 9:57 PM on Oct 18, 2015. The lights were sighted in a southwesterly direction. The lights were larger than yard lights and were about 25 to 30 degrees above the horizon.

The officers were traveling south on Highway 395 between Connell and Mesa, WA.

James Clarkson MUFON Director for Washington State received the sighting report and requested assistance with analysis of radar data. In response to this request I wrote a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requesting aviation radar data for the Pasco, WA (Tri-cities) area.

I received the radar data submission from the FAA about 2 months later (December 18, 2015).  The FAA provided the data that I requested.

Notes on Radar Data: The radar data were received for Pasco, WA Traffic Control and a NTAP (National Transportation Analysis Program) was also received. The NTAP included a long range radar from Fossil, Oregon which is about 100 miles south of Pasco, WA and the Pasco, WA Traffic Control radar.  (See Figure One to the left).

The closest returns on radar were about 18 miles to the southwest (near Pasco, WA airport). (See Figure Two below.)  The interesting thing about the data in Figure Two is that the Pasco radar report listed that returns were “target reports.” This suggests that data were filtered and weather returns, gr0und traffic, birds and radar angels were removed. This suggests that the remaining returns were actual moving aerial targets.  All of the primary returns are shown in Figure Two below.  A typical “unfiltered” radar map is shown in Figure Three below. The radar map in Figure Three is for Albany, New York.  You can see A “conglomerate” of returns and it is difficult to determine real moving targets while Figure Two shows small patterns of returns.

We can’t definitively say for sure if the radar picked up the objects seen by the witnesses, but we can say that radar returns were in the direction (southwest) and at the time (9:50 to 10 PM) that the witnesses saw the objects. The radar returns were around 18 miles from the estimated witness location and near the Pasco radar. (See Figure Four below.) Figure Four shows the area of returns and a zoom in showing the speed and direction of movement of the returns.

The zoom in box to the left is for returns detected from 9:50 to 9:51 PM. For the box to the left there were six radar returns in sequence.  The target was moving slowly east, then abruptly changes direction to the south-southwest at a higher speed and then turned east-southeast at original speed (38 MPH).  One can’t say for sure if each return represents the same target, but the targets were in sequence with each turn of the radar antenna. The targets were not detected after 9:51 PM.

The zoom in box to the right shows returns from 9:54 to 9:55 PM. The box to the right fits more closely with the witness observation time.  Again the speed of the target is slow (38 to 48 MPH) and moving to the west-southwest. The target then turned direction to the northwest and nearly increased it’s speed tenfold. Again we can’t say for sure if this is one target, but it  fits with the radar antenna rotation sequence. The direction of movement (westerly direction ) fits with what the witnesses saw. The targets were no longer detected after 9:55 PM.

Of course the targets could have been multiple targets, but may have showed up as one target on the radar scope if they were close together. The witnesses observed multiple targets.

There were also returns noted in the same area observed by the witnesses before the sighting time, but the witnesses would not have been in position to observe the returns.

Doppler weather radar data were collected from Portland, Oregon and Spokane, Washington. Both of these radars reach the Pasco, WA area.  Some light showers were observed a few hours prior to the sighting. Skies were clear at Pasco Airport at the time of the sighting. The Doppler radar maps did not show anything unusual. The radar sites did show some scattered showers, but the area was well removed from the sighting area. However, Doppler radars are not designed to detect aircraft. The radars have a narrow beam width (one degree) which means that objects will not be detected unless they happen to fly through the narrow beam.

The discussion below makes the assumption that the object(s) seen by the witnesses were detected by radar:

One of the officers said that his thumb would cover up the object. A thumb has a width of 2 arc degrees. (The moon has a width of 30 arc minutes which is about 25% the size of a thumb in apparent width.)  Let’s assume that the object had a width of 1 arc degrees:

Using trigonometry the width of the object would be around 1,650 feet if what the witnesses saw was detected by radar. For comparison purposes the length of a 747 aircraft is 231 feet with a wingspan of 211 feet.

The witnesses thought that the object(s) were at an elevation of 20 to 30 degrees. For computations we will assume that the elevation was 25 degrees. If we assume that the primary radar returns belonged to the object we can say the following:

Using trigonometry if the radar returns represented the object, the elevation would have just over 44,000 feet.

If the returns represent what the witnesses saw the objects would have been quite large and would have been very visible from the Pasco, WA area.  The fact that the time of the sighting was late (around 10 PM on a Sunday night before the week) and the fact that the objects were only visible for a short time may have resulted in fewer (in any) witnesses.  Also there is a possibility that the objects may have appeared larger to the witnesses due to light scattering in the atmosphere which can make objects appear bigger. This is particularly true if objects are lower on the horizon (25 degrees or lower).

Conclusion and Summary:

2 DOC officers saw 2 large orange objects to the Southwest while returning home from work around 10 PM on October 18, 2015.  The officers were near Connell, WA and were returning to the Tri-Cities area. The officers had never before or have since seen the lights.

The lights were near the Hanford Nuclear Facility in Richland, Washington.

Aviation radar data were heavily filtered which eliminates most superfluous returns (birds, weather, ground targets, angels, etc.)
Radar targets were detected in the direction and times when the witnesses saw the objects. The distance was large (around 18 miles).

The radar targets were only visible for 2 periods of time (9:50-9:51 PM & 9:54-9:55 PM) of around one minute. This is consistent with the brief time that the witnesses saw the objects. The radar targets were in a southwesterly direction which is where the witnesses saw the objects.

The targets were moving in a westerly direction at speeds of 38 to 48 MPH and then accelerated to over 300 MPH before vanishing from the scope. The radar detected this from 9:54 to 9:55 PM. This is consistent with the direction of movement reported by the witnesses and closest to the time (9:52 to 9:57 PM).

If the targets represent what the witnesses saw the objects would have flying around 44,000 feet and would have been over 1,500 feet in width.

The witnesses saw multiple targets. Perhaps the targets were so close to one another that the radar only painted one return?

The targets were close to Pasco Airport. One would think that others would have witnessed the objects if the radar targets represented what the witnesses saw due to their large size and proximity to the Pasco area.

On Tuesday at around 1:45 am while walking my dogs around my neighborhood. I entered an area that has no street lights and most of the porch/driveway lights were off. So it was really dark.

I looked up at the stars and noticed that a very large patch of the sky was just black. No stars at all. Being near the city, you can usually see the light being reflected off the clouds. But in this case. It was just black. No city light reflection at all.
I should note that I was still walking down the street, heading West. While partly keeping an eye on the sky and where I was walking, and trying to puzzle out what I was witnessing, I noticed that the stars ahead of the black were disappearing.

I stopped and looked up and back, and noticed that the stars behind, towards the East part of the sky, were reappearing. This added to my being puzzled, since the clouds usually move from a South-West to North-East direction in this area. And whatever this was, it was moving East to West.

Also I noted that a very large part of the sky above me was obscured. But with whatever it was, being so black, I would not venture to guess it’s size or shape as I could not make out any details of the object.

I should also note. There was no sound from the object. My dogs never reacted to whatever was moving above us. All I heard around us was the normal sounds of the night.

Description: I started to see UFOs again in Vancouver, Washington. I saw them a lot. It seemed to start about 1990 or around there. I would see them over my apartment a lot and jets would fly after they were out of sight. I even called the radio station there to see if anyone else saw them which was a mistake because then a lady showed up that next day that I did not know. I just did not feel right and she wanted to come in to try and sell me jewelry. She just acted funny so I said no. I would see them over Vancouver Lake a lot. I just kept it to myself until now. I lived in Vancouver for about 9 years and saw them for about 7 years of that time. I seemed to just get use to it like everyday life.

Note: This sighting occurred several years ago and the exact date of occurrence is unknown so little investigation can be conducted. (Like looking for sightings in other UFO databases or newspaper articles.) However, the sighting is interesting given that that the witness saw jets chasing unknown objects.

Description: The witness (Toby) was walking around the Rattlesnake Lake with a hiking companion. They at once saw a bright light at about a 20 degree angle above the horizon to the west. The light became very bright and grew to about 1/4 the size of a full moon. The light would then get dim to the point that it almost would vanish. Then it would brighten again and then dim again. The light repeated this pattern for about 40 minutes. The light was mostly hovering and was moving very little. No sound was heard and some other aircraft were seen in the area. There were a few clouds in the sky and then the sky became cloudy. The light was actually visible through the clouds. The witnesses left the hiking area after about 40 minutes and then returned. At that time the object was observed to be straight up at 90 degrees. At one point during the sighting the witness could see a black outline when the light dimmed. The object was lost when the cloud cover thickened. Some light snow flurries were in the area and temperature was a chilly 37 degrees. The witness remarked that the skies were so bright that they didn’t need a flashlight to see to walk.UFOs NorthWest Note: The witness was quite familiar with aircraft and knew that the object was not a helicopter. (Because there were no flashing lights and there was no sound.) The object was not a planet because it changed luminosity and eventually moved overhead from the west. The object was not a satellite because it didn’t move fast enough. The object was likely not a hot air balloon because it was the wrong color (the color was white rather than yellow-orange which is the colors emitted by hot air balloons). The enhanced photo above does not look like a hot air balloon. Perhaps the object could have been a high altitude balloon? A check of winds aloft showed that winds were from the West to West-Northwest at 10 to 20 knots in the lower 10,000 feet of the atmosphere. The object moved from 20 degrees over the Western horizon to 90 degrees (straight up). A flotation device would move in this direction with a westerly (and light) wind component. Also Google is implementing a program called “Project Loon” where stratospheric balloons will deliver 4G cell phone service to areas devoid of coverage. However, Google is testing these balloons in foreign countries so it is unlikely to be an explanation for this sighting. Also the North Bend, WA area (near sighting location) is close to Seattle and has adequate cell phone and internet service.

The lights at times would form a circle and were visible for over an hour. The lights did not flash and were much bigger than the surrounding stars. Skies were clear at the time of the sighting. No sound was heard. One witness thought that he saw some smoke near the lights.
