Background

The following case was submitted to The Black Vault / TBV Investigations on June 16, 2018, just a few days after the sighting. It was assigned to TBV Investigations’ researcher Tiffany Hahn for investigation and analysis.

Witness Testimony

The witness submitted the following testimony. Only minor corrections were made for clarification:

“While flying back from [Las Vegas], heading due east toward Indianapolis I was taking a video of [lightning]below. When I watched the video, I noticed a rectangular object flying by, turning from a bright white to a mild green color and made a noise going by. This was somewhere over western Indiana. At 40,000 feet altitude, I have no idea what this might be. Note: The video shows the object going up, but in reality it is going from left to right.”

The Analysis

Witness Pat Alles’ statement contained helpful pieces of data relevant to this investigation and included video of the reported event. 

The witness reported that they were traveling on Southwest flight from Las Vegas, NV to Indianapolis, IN. Based on the provided information, I believe this is the flight the witness was on, noted below. The flight departed McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 11, 2018 at 8:01pm local time. The flight landed at Indianapolis International Airport in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 12, 2018 at 2:21am local time. The witness’ approximation of June 12, 2018 at 1:00am appears feasible, and any time discrepancy may be accounted for due to time zone changes.

It seems likely that a potential event over “Western Indiana,” as the witness reported, would have occurred between 1:00am and 2:00am EDT on June 12, 2018 due to the flight path of the aircraft noted above. 

Weather is frequently a factor in witnessing an unexplained aerial event. The witness reported recording lightning in the clouds below the plane. This lightning is viewable in the provided video. As you will note from the weather history below, it does appear that there were clouds and rain over Indianapolis in the early morning hours of June 12, 2018. 

Despite the weather being unfavorable for viewing aerial phenomena from the ground, I conducted a search at the National UFO Reporting Center website for reports in the evening hours of June 11th and the early morning hours of June 12th near the State of Indiana. Reports for the month of June 2018 can be viewed here: http://www.nuforc.org/webreports/ndxe201806.html

There is only one report with information matching the date and location mentioned by the witness.

The event reported to the “National UFO Reporting Center” lists the date and time as “approximate.” As such, I do not know if these are related sightings. They seem to describe different events. 

Video Analysis

The video provided by the witness is 10 seconds in length. In the first few seconds, there is what appears to be flashes of light that were confirmed by the witness to be lightning in the clouds below. The object in question appears in the video around the 3-second mark. It appears to travel from the lower left to the upper right portion of the screen. I slowed down the anomaly and captured the 17 frames where the anomaly is visible. I created an animated .gif with these 17 frames, as seen below. I put a red line diagonally through the screen to accentuate the fact that the anomaly is not going in a straight line. Around Frame 03 and 04, the object appears to flutter or float closer to the red line, then again moves away from it. 

Although not conclusive, it seems unlikely that a potential UFO flying at high speed would flutter or float. This information may indicate that the light colored anomaly is a piece of debris in the air outside the airplane illuminated by cabin lights, or possibly a reflection of something inside the cabin onto the multi-paned window of the airplane. Further, I believe the light colored anomaly is out of focus because the witness was recording lightning far below and the debris flew close to the window or was a reflection fairly close to the window. If the camera were focused far below, something close to the lens would appear out of focus, and the lens would not have had time to focus before it was out of view.

And a screen shot, possibly indicated an arm illuminated by a smart watch / Apple Watch? This is not conclusive, but one possibility. 

Increasing the brightness also reveals the witness did not have the camera lens flush with the window, which opens up the large possibility the light was a reflection from within the cabin. The light source in the following freeze frame is the lightning, and the cut off to the left and the arrows indicate the edge of the window, which allows a lot of ‘room’ for reflections to take place on the window pane and reflect back into the camera offering an illusion of an object outside the plane, like a UFO. 

The witness also indicated that the visual anomaly was accompanied by a strange sound, a sound that the witness attributed to the possible UFO.

After some editing, I was able to reduce some of the background noise created by the plane’s engine. The visualization of the EDITED audio is as follows.

The visualization of the edited audio above is consistent with human voice patterns. Additionally, both myself and the witness agreed that the edited audio sounds like a human female voice. The witness and myself also discussed how the recording device was inside the plane. If the sound had originated from outside the plane, it should have been audible to everyone inside the plane if it were loud enough to be recorded. The witness reported that they did not hear anything at the time of the recording nor did anyone inside the plane appear to investigate a strange sound or mention it verbally.

Conclusions

While recording lightning below their commercial flight over Indiana, witness Pat Alles recorded a light colored visual anomaly and accompanying audio. Upon investigating, the reported date, time, and location appear to be correct based on developed flight information. 

Upon analyzing the visual and audio portions of the provided video, several items were noted. I do not have any reason to believe that the video has been falsified or tampered with in any meaningful way. It may have been cropped from a longer video, but this does not affect this investigation. Based on the fluttering behavior of the light colored anomaly and it being out of focus, I believe it is a piece of debris outside the plane’s window. After editing the video to reduce some of the plane’s engine noise, the audio accompanying the video appears to be that of a human female voice. 

It seems likely that this is not a UFO and is explainable.

RED/ORANGE UFO WITHOUT SOUND FILMED HOVERING OVER NATIONAL DR FOR ABOUT 10 MINS ON 8/16/15 BEFORE DISAPPEARING

That said, it is possible this photo is something else, tied to this story erroneously, and can be explained as a lens flare. It is possible there is no connection between the photo and what the witnesses saw.

The truth is out there — and it’s hovering over The Bronx.

A mysterious light in the sky so freaked out some Hunts Points residents that they called authorities to report their only possible explanation: the arrival of aliens from outer space.

A “flying spaceship” is moving swiftly over East 149th Street and the Bruckner Expressway, one terrified woman told a 911 operator Saturday night, according to an FDNY source.

Juan Marrero said he, too, had a close encounter.

“I look up and see this fireball, ‘Whoosh!’ and then another, ‘Whoosh!’ ” said Marrero, 57, a pigeon fancier who was on the roof of his building at 11:30 p.m. when he saw two bright lights streaking across the sky. “From one side of the sky to the other, too fast for an airplane.”

Andres Morales, 25, said he also saw the speedy orb — and did his best to document his out-of-this-world experience.

“I stuck my hand out the car window and snapped like crazy,” he told The Post. “I don’t know what it was but it was moving crazy fast.”

It’s not the first time locals have said extraterrestrial immigrants boogied down from another galaxy to check out the neighborhood. Unusual lights in the sky were seen in the same area last year, and also in 2011, according to self-described “UFO journalist” Ryan Sprague.

“I definitely think we’re dealing with anomalies that could potentially be nonhuman,” Sprague said.

East 149th Street is close to La Guardia Airport, which could lead to “misidentifications,” Sprague conceded, though he said witnesses should not be discounted.

Those who saw the orb on Saturday, and the one last May, echoed the same description — a light that “just sort of hovered, stationary, and then shot off in the blink of an eye,” he stressed.

“The maneuvers these objects seem to be making don’t fit with any current technology that we’re aware of,” Sprague said.

“They’re not moving, then darting off at unbelievable speeds,” he explained. “I just don’t think that’s something a human could survive.”

But why The Bronx?

“To study us,” one longtime resident offered. “Maybe they want to learn to break dance.”

Description (In Witness’s Own Words): I was outside working on my jeeps and the next thing I know I saw these lights that were really bright and kind a hurt my eyes. So then I see this light covering the whole sky and I heard a really loud noise like a tornado siren right in my ear!@! Then this beam of light starts to pull me up into this machine, luckily I was holding on to my jeep and they let me go.

I prayed really hard and I think that saved me because they left real quick when they saw I wasn’t letting go of the jeep.

Investigator’s Notes:  Certainly this is a spectacular story.  The witness did leave complete contact information (email, phone number , address, etc).  Normally hoaxers don’t leave contact information.  (There are exceptions to the rule.) 

The witness has not responded to my email message whereby I asked him several questions about his experience.  This more indicative that this encounter is a hoax.  Any updates to this case will be posted.

UFOs NorthWest Note: The object could have been of another color, but the infrared view properties were set to display black and white. The object is not blinking so it is likely not an aircraft. It is too big large to be a satellite.

Several neighbors living off Alderpointe Street near Panama and Gosford in southwest Bakersfield  say they first witnessed a mysterious blue light in the sky back in February, and again in March. Both times they saw it on the 14th.

“I was taking the recycling out to the trash can, and I saw this blue light in the sky, and I thought, that’s kinda bright to be a star, I’ve never seen a blue star be that bright,” said Kelly Castruita.

“Watched it for about 10 minutes, just doing weird stuff, it would turn on and off and it would disappear,” added Kelly’s husband Jeff.

Neighbors said the blue light was about the size of a dime, and started off just above the skyline, and then migrated northwest.

“It pretty much flew, stopped, then started doing some upward motion and downward motion, so I’ve never seen anything like it,” said neighbor Randy Gabriel.

“We’ll see the police helicopters once in a while, or an airplane go by, but nothing like this,” said Ricardo Pantoja, who has been living in the neighborhood for 23 years.

23ABC’s Lindsey Adams took the videos to Senior Deputy Victor Keesey with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, whose office works closely in conjunction with neighboring Meadows Field Airport.

“I’m not aware of any calls that we’ve received regarding any blue lights, or strange lights in that area. Very seldom, if ever, have I seen anything like it. However, we are in the age of drones now, obviously we have military drones, but we have civilian drones now and drones for purchase, so that is a possibility,” said Senior Deputy Victor Keesey.

“It looked way too high up in the sky to be a drone,” mentioned witness Kelly Castruita.

“It wasn’t a regular airplane or a drone, it was much bigger than what a drone would be, especially at that distance,” added neighbor Ricardo Pantoja.

23ABC got in touch with public affairs at Edwards Air Force Base, and we were told they have not received any calls about the light, but officials mentioned it could be a possible aurora in the sky, or possible testing from Vandenberg.

Looked like it came from over the 215 fwy at the 210 fwy area. Anyone else see or hear it? We are located near 17th St and Campus Ave. in Upland CA.

Please reply or post if you saw or heard anything. We lost power for 1-2 minutes each time, bedside clock started blinking, so I had to reset it over and over.

Stavropol’s horizon offered a jaw-dropping view to those who weren’t asleep at around 00:39 local time (21.39 GMT on Monday). The soundless flash of light scared several people, as it made some streetlights in the city go out, while being accompanied by the flickering of lights inside apartments and houses.

Local residents have come up with various theories to interpret the incident – military exercises that are currently taking place not far from the scene, faults in the electricity net, Northern Lights, an asteroid and even UFOs.

“I was very frightened by what I saw, I was already in bed. It looked as if something very bright lit up my ceiling,” a woman shared her experience on social media, Russian daily Argumenty i Fakty reported.

According to the Hydrometeorological Center of the city, the phenomenon “can’t be attributed to nature”– rather, it could be anthropogenic. The source of the light is thought to have been located somewhere on the ground.

However power engineers have rejected a version suggesting a fault in the power supply line leaving the public clueless about the nature of the mysterious flash.

Note from The Black Vault: It is my belief that cases like this are nothing more than a meteor entering the Earth’s atmosphere. In the past, we know (especially in and around Russia) there have been multiple cases of meteors lighting up the night sky, and even hitting the Earth’s surface.  In this case, you can clearly see a heavy cloud cover – so it is plausible this was a meteorite (shielded by the cloud cover) but the immense bright light still illuminates the night sky.
