History of Research in Subgravity and Zero-G at the Air Force Missile Development Center, Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico 1948-1958

Background

The foreword offers a very interesting perspective into the pre-Apollo era, where weightlessness, had not yet been achieved:

“Weightlessness, the weird condition of subgravity which man has never before experience and survived — except for the initial split-second of short distance free fall — has recently become a major field of serious scientific research. Man now approaches this condition as his fast-climbing fighter flattens out to intercept an enemy bomber, and he may soon experience it for a long duration on multimonth interplanetary excursions.”
