The Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) Document Inventory List

Background

According to the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC):

The Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC®) has served the information needs of the Defense community for more than 70 years. DTIC reports to the Assistant Secretary of Defense For Research and Engineering ASD(RE).

Our mission is to provide essential, technical research, development, testing and evaluation (RDT&E) information rapidly, accurately and reliably to support our DoD customers’ needs.

More than 50 percent of the research records in the collection are available through the access controlled R&E Gateway, which is accessible to DoD personnel, defense contractors, federal government personnel and contractors, and selected academic institutions. The R&E Gateway sites require common access card (CAC) login or registration.

We also provide the general public and industry with access to unclassified, unlimited information, including many full-text downloadable documents.

In 2009, the DTIC did a full document inventory. The result, was a more than 10,000 page document detailing each “accession number” that is assigned to every document in their collection.

Although it lacks identifying information on the accession, it gives an indication on what is currently in the inventory, and which are missing (which was what my original request was for.)

The codes are as follows:

U – Unclassified
A – Active
R – Replaced – When a number has a line drawn through it, that could mean that the number has been replaced by another number. It may also mean that we do not have that document physically in our collection and may be located at another site.
C – Cancelled
