In this undated document (circa late ’70s / ’80s?) from the CIA’s Stargate program collection, Dr. Hal Puthoff presents a rebuttal to James Randi’s book, “The Magic of Uri Geller.” It offers a “fact sheet” to correct the misconceptions and errors put forth by Randi in his book, while shedding light on the world of the Stargate program.

James Randi, also known as “The Amazing Randi,” was a renowned magician, escape artist, and skeptic. Throughout his career, he took a strong stance against pseudoscience, paranormal claims, and frauds. One of his most famous works is “The Magic of Uri Geller,” in which Randi criticized the alleged psychic abilities of Geller, an Israeli-British performer known for his spoon-bending demonstrations.

On the other hand, Dr. Hal Puthoff is an American physicist and parapsychologist who has been involved in various classified research programs, including the CIA’s Stargate program. He has a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University and has made significant contributions to the field of remote viewing.

The Stargate program was a top-secret CIA project that aimed to investigate and harness psychic phenomena for intelligence-gathering purposes. Launched in the 1970s, the program explored the potential of remote viewing, a purported psychic ability to perceive information from distant locations without the use of the five traditional senses. Although the program was officially terminated in 1995, its legacy remains a topic of interest and intrigue.

In the document available below, Dr. Puthoff meticulously addresses each of Randi’s arguments against Geller’s psychic abilities, providing counter-evidence and insights. The fact sheet aims to set the record straight and reveal the truth behind the claims and counterclaims that surround Uri Geller’s abilities.

The date of creation is unknown, but appears to be an overview presentation about Project Star Gate, which includes information about the Mission, Definitions, Management, Personnel Participation, Benefits, Primary Methodologies, Secondary Methodologies, and Categories of Taskings.

Per the presentation itself, with a DIA seal, it appears it was created while Star Gate was operating within the DIA, which would make it pre 1995 (prior to the transfer to the CIA).

Background

The following document was obtained by The Black Vault through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and was part of the “Stargate Collection” release.

This document, titled “Mars Exploration,” dated May 22, 1984, records a remote viewing session conducted as part of the CIA’s Stargate Program. In the session, a remote viewer was provided with geographic coordinates and tasked with viewing the planet Mars at a time period approximately one million years B.C.

The transcript describes large pyramid structures, megalithic architecture with smooth walls carved into canyons, deep channels, severe dust storms resulting from major geologic activity, and very tall, thin humanoid figures wearing fitted clothing. The viewer also perceived large structures apparently designed as shelters from storms.

In December 2023, The Black Vault ran the document through an AI image generator (DALL-E as interpreted by ChatGPT 4), and between the two, these are four examples of what it came up with.

Background

The Stargate Project was the umbrella code name of one of several sub-projects established by the U.S. Federal Government to investigate claims of psychic phenomena with potential military and domestic applications, particularly “remote viewing”: the purported ability to psychically “see” events, sites, or information from a great distance.

These projects were active from the 1970s through 1995 and were primarily handled by the DIA and CIA. They followed up early psychic research done at The Stanford Research Institute (SRI), Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), The American Society for Psychical Research, and other psychical research labs.

After many years of fighting, the CIA compiled most of the research material gathered during this program, and compiled it into a multi-disc release stretching 89,901 pages of material.

Although many private companies have aimed to profit off of this publicly available material and charge for access, The Black Vault added the entire collection back in the early 2000s, available free to download below.

Please note: The CIA originally chose the WORST way to catalogue and archive this information – and they did so in thousands of multi-page .tif files.

In December of 2020, The Black Vault converted the original .tif scans into searchable .pdf documents. Both options are available below.

Document Archive

The CIA’s Stargate Collection – Full DVD Contents – 89,901 Pages

.pdf Collection

.zip File Containing 89,901 Pages within 12,301 Files [6.61GB] – Note: This is a large file. It is recommended you right click, and press “save as…” to your hard drive.

.pdf Collection – Browse Directory Tree – Note: This is a browsable directory for the same content of the .zip above. This was added for the ability to browse file by file rather than downloaded a large .zip file.

Original .tif Collection

The following is a list of links to the folders directly from the DVD. Originally, it was released on a collection of 15 CD-ROMs, but later converted to one DVD by the CIA. The files are multi-page .tif files, along with (generally unusable) .txt files of the “converted text.” The process used to convert the documents to text was very poor, and is largely useless. However, they are included for reference.

To view these documents, you will need a viewer that supports the multi-page .tif files (Meaning, one single .tif files can have 400 pages in it to read. If you use the wrong viewer, you’ll only see one page, if anything at all.)

To view them properly, I highly recommend a 100% free program called IRFAN View. Just follow the link, and click DOWNLOAD to install. Then, you can download any .tif file to your computer, and open it with this program.

The documents are catalogued as follows… simply click on the disc, and you’ll be taken to the index of records (It will open in a new window. To return to this page — simply close the pop up window):
