Description: A woman and her aunt were driving and her aunt first saw an object that she thought was an airplane. The niece said that the object was too big to be a plane and had a spherical shape. The witness stated that the object was also too big to be a drone.

The object was close to the car. The object flew over some trees and shined spotlights towards the ground. The witness thought that the object was the size of a small house.

Description: Hi William: my name is J. and I am contacting you from just east of Cincinnati. I would really like to speak with you about the two posts made in the site about the Orange lights near Hillsboro. I have seen them the past two nights at approximately 8:15 PM. Now I see I am not the only one. Please give me a call when you get this.

Phone Interview With Witness: The witness stated that the same lights were seen on successive nights (Nov 3 and 4, 2016) at about the same time. The witness stated that he was driving home and 3 red-orange lights in a line to the east and southeast (towards Hillsboro, OH). Then 2 more lights appeared to the left of these lights. The witness stated the lights suddenly appeared, then sequentially vanished and then reappeared in the same location. The witness lost sight of them while due to obstructions approaching his driveway. Then he looked in the location that they had been and they were gone. He then saw a cluster of white flashing lights in the same area where the red-orange lights had been. He said that the lights were not from aircraft. The witness served 8 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and is familiar with aircraft.

UFOs NorthWest Note: The first few frames of the video appear to show lights in a triangular formation. Subsequent to that the witness zoomed in on the lights so all of the lights making up the triangular formation were not visible.

Location of Sighting: Near Nephi, Utah

Time of Sighting: Between 12:12 and 12:13 AM MST

Description:

This case was reported to me by Erica Lukes who is the director of MUFON for the state of Utah. She knows a radio show host who was scanning communications between aircraft and the FAA shortly after midnight on January 14, 2016. He heard a conversation between an airline pilot and Air Route Traffic Control. The pilot reported seeing an extremely long bright object that he estimated a mile wide to his right. The air traffic controller told him that he was looking in the direction of Nephi, Utah. Apparently the air traffic controller told the pilot that the object was not detected on radar. The object appeared to keep pace with the aircraft.

A Freedom of Information (FOIA) request was written to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). About six weeks later we received a response to the FOIA. The response consisted of radar returns, voice tapes and tower logs. The FAA is to be commended for their full and timely response to our request.

Research showed that the aircraft was American Airlines Flight Number 434 which was enroute from San Francisco, CA to Philadelphia, PA. The actual sighting time was between 12:12 and 12:13 AM MST on January 14, 2016. We were able to find segments of the conversation on the Air Traffic Control archives website, but much of conversation was deleted. One could hear the controller telling the pilot that Nephi, Utah was off to his right and the pilot acknowledging the transmission. However, the UFO report was not on the tape. The ham radio operator did not record the conversation so the “UFO report” could not be heard. He heard the conversation on the frequency of 127.95 mhz.

Update: March 4, 2016. The voice tape obtain from the FAA (see above) does fill in some of the transmission missing from the tape from the Air Traffic Control archives website. The only thing not confirmed from the original transmission was the estimated size of the object. The airline crew described the object as a large orange square.

The aircraft was flying at 31,000 feet and 530 knots at the time of sighting. The aircraft was headed in a ENE direction. The radar shows a “dense” area of returns at approximately the 2 o’clock position. These returns are quite isolated and very numerous. They are likely not birds, angels, ground targets or anomalous propagation.

The time is from 12:08 to 12:15 AM which is the time that the crew saw the object(s).  The map shows a large area of returns near and to the East of I-15.  The returns are not traffic as the radar is too far away to detect ground targets.

The “zoom out” map shows  the concentration of radar returns just to the SW of Nephi.  This is in the position and time observed by airline crew. Note that most of the radar map is devoid of returns except in the area immediately to the SW of Nephi.

The Doppler radar map for Salt Lake City was also obtained.  The map does show some returns to the Northeast of Nephi at the time of the sighting. The radar was operating in “clear air mode” which means that the gain is turned up making it more sensitive. (See radar map above.)

Figure 5 above shows the location of the 2 radar sites used in the analysis.  One radar (Cedar City, UT) is about 155 miles to the SSW of sighting location.  The other radar (Francis Peak, UT) is about 90 miles to the north. These returns were likely true objects and probably quite  large given the distance from the radar sites.

I also took a look at the radar returns for the entire time period of my radar request which was from midnight to 12:30 AM MST.  Figure 7 above shows all of the returns for this time period near Nephi.  Returns were found for each minute from midnight to 12:30 AM in the sighting area. In all 106 radar returns were detected. This means that the object(s) were there before and after the sighting. The returns in Figure 7 almost look a “gridded” radar map. Figure 8 shows the plot of these returns on a Google Earth relief map. It is fairly obvious that the returns are not due to the radar reflecting from higher terrain. A few of elevations are displayed. There was very little elevation change in the area of the returns.

Radar Propagation Analysis:
Atmospheric conditions can cause radar waves to bend downward or upward causing “false returns” or showing returns in the wrong location. Also there is a possibility that radar returns may be reflected off of higher terrain. (However, this is generally not the case as aviation radar is designed to not detect stationary targets.) However, Doppler weather radar can detect higher terrain and result in false returns. Figure 8 shows very little elevation change in the area of the returns.

The above slide show of photos taken by Utah MUFON Assistant State Director show no anomalies in area that could possibly cause radar returns.

Both of the aviation radars were at considerably higher altitude than the target detect area. The Cedar City aviation radar (155 miles to the SSW) was at an elevation of 10,760 feet above sea level which is over 5,000 feet higher than the target area. The Francis Peak aviation radar (88 miles to the north) was at an elevation of 9,324 feet which is nearly 4,000 feet above the target detect area. Given this scenario it is unlikely that the radar waves would be refracted abnormally because the waves would be above any surface temperature inversions over lower terrain. Figure 6 shows the locations of the two aviation radars with respect to the target detect area.

Figure 10 above is a table of computed radar refractivity gradients/1,000 Feet for the Cedar City, UT radar. Figure 11 is a similar table for the Francis Peak, UT radar. The tables show pressure levels, heights of pressure surfaces ASL, temperature, dew point temperature in degrees C, refractivity index and the gradient of refractivity index per 1,000 feet. The data were obtained from the weather balloon sounding of the atmosphere from Las Vegas, NV for the Cedar City radar. Data were obtained from the weather balloon sounding at Salt Lake City, UT for the Francis Peak radar. For both radar sites the refraction gradients are small and well within the normal atmospheric propagation of 0 to -24/1,000 feet. Given that fact the radars were at high elevations (over 10,000 feet for the Cedar City radar and over 9,300 feet for the Francis Peak radar) and given the values in the above tables the probability of anomalous radar propagation (false returns or returns in the wrong location) is nearly 0.

Comments From Martin Shough, Retired Air Traffic Controller & Radar Expert -England: As for the radar, you’re right that those primaries clustered around the interstate are not traffic and AP seems not to be relevant. You might get multiple-trip ghosts from (say) remote mountains appearing at almost any displayed range, but they’d be random with respect to local features. In this case I do get the sense of some correlation with the road, but I don’t know why. I doubt AP would look like this. There’s no significant terrain here. No airfield (although there is a small airfield and heliport to the NE at Nephi). I have absolutely no idea what they are.

Preliminary Interpretation of Voice Tapes and Radar Data:

More analysis is being conducted for this case.  My preliminary impressions follow:

1. Pilot reports a large unusual orange square of lights while flying at 31,000 feet.
2. The first conversation where the crew asked if the object was on radar & the FAA responded saying that the object was not on radar was likely redacted (see Figure 1).
3. The radar shows a dense area of returns at the exact position and time reported by the pilot.
4.  These dense returns are well removed from radar sites. The closest site was about 90 miles to the north at Francis Peak, Utah. The other radar was located at Cedar City, Utah about 155 miles to the SSW. (See Figure 6 above.)
5.  These returns are not due to military operations. There are several restricted military operations areas (MOA’s) in Utah, but Nephi is well outside of these area. (See Figure 9 above.)
6. These returns are not drones. Regular drones would not be likely detected at the long distances from the radar sites. Military drones would be detected, but they would not be in the area. (See Figure 6 above.)
7. These returns are likely not due to anomalous propagation. (See Figure 10 and 11.)
Anomalous propagation generally starts closer to the radar antenna.
8.  Birds, weather targets would not be detected in an isolated area that far from the radar sites.
9. Radar angels are sometimes observed. These are false targets, but there would not be that many of them that far removed from the radar sites.
10. The object(s) were likely at the sighting location before and after the time that the crew sighted the object(s). Figure 7 above shows returns for each minute from midnight to 12:30 AM MST.
9. Of course keep in mind that the pilot crew saw a large square area of orange lights so the radar and observation “corroborate” each other.

Where Do We Go From Here? Erica Lukes and her team of investigators have ran an ad in the local newspaper to see if other people have seen anything unusual. She conversed with the manager of a local truck stop near the sighting location and was told that UFO’s are frequently sighted in the area. One investigator believes that the crew sighted lights from a local power point (Currant Creek Plant – Mona, UT). To me this doesn’t explain the sighting as the conglomerate of radar returns suggests something unusual. Also I would expect that the same crew had flown this same route before. If this was true, why would they ask the FAA about the location?

Radar Analysis and Computation Worksheet
Hanford, WA sighting of Large Orange Objects

Background: 2 Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) Officers saw bright orange lights for around 50 seconds between 9:52 and 9:57 PM on Oct 18, 2015. The lights were sighted in a southwesterly direction. The lights were larger than yard lights and were about 25 to 30 degrees above the horizon.

The officers were traveling south on Highway 395 between Connell and Mesa, WA.

James Clarkson MUFON Director for Washington State received the sighting report and requested assistance with analysis of radar data. In response to this request I wrote a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requesting aviation radar data for the Pasco, WA (Tri-cities) area.

I received the radar data submission from the FAA about 2 months later (December 18, 2015).  The FAA provided the data that I requested.

Notes on Radar Data: The radar data were received for Pasco, WA Traffic Control and a NTAP (National Transportation Analysis Program) was also received. The NTAP included a long range radar from Fossil, Oregon which is about 100 miles south of Pasco, WA and the Pasco, WA Traffic Control radar.  (See Figure One to the left).

The closest returns on radar were about 18 miles to the southwest (near Pasco, WA airport). (See Figure Two below.)  The interesting thing about the data in Figure Two is that the Pasco radar report listed that returns were “target reports.” This suggests that data were filtered and weather returns, gr0und traffic, birds and radar angels were removed. This suggests that the remaining returns were actual moving aerial targets.  All of the primary returns are shown in Figure Two below.  A typical “unfiltered” radar map is shown in Figure Three below. The radar map in Figure Three is for Albany, New York.  You can see A “conglomerate” of returns and it is difficult to determine real moving targets while Figure Two shows small patterns of returns.

We can’t definitively say for sure if the radar picked up the objects seen by the witnesses, but we can say that radar returns were in the direction (southwest) and at the time (9:50 to 10 PM) that the witnesses saw the objects. The radar returns were around 18 miles from the estimated witness location and near the Pasco radar. (See Figure Four below.) Figure Four shows the area of returns and a zoom in showing the speed and direction of movement of the returns.

The zoom in box to the left is for returns detected from 9:50 to 9:51 PM. For the box to the left there were six radar returns in sequence.  The target was moving slowly east, then abruptly changes direction to the south-southwest at a higher speed and then turned east-southeast at original speed (38 MPH).  One can’t say for sure if each return represents the same target, but the targets were in sequence with each turn of the radar antenna. The targets were not detected after 9:51 PM.

The zoom in box to the right shows returns from 9:54 to 9:55 PM. The box to the right fits more closely with the witness observation time.  Again the speed of the target is slow (38 to 48 MPH) and moving to the west-southwest. The target then turned direction to the northwest and nearly increased it’s speed tenfold. Again we can’t say for sure if this is one target, but it  fits with the radar antenna rotation sequence. The direction of movement (westerly direction ) fits with what the witnesses saw. The targets were no longer detected after 9:55 PM.

Of course the targets could have been multiple targets, but may have showed up as one target on the radar scope if they were close together. The witnesses observed multiple targets.

There were also returns noted in the same area observed by the witnesses before the sighting time, but the witnesses would not have been in position to observe the returns.

Doppler weather radar data were collected from Portland, Oregon and Spokane, Washington. Both of these radars reach the Pasco, WA area.  Some light showers were observed a few hours prior to the sighting. Skies were clear at Pasco Airport at the time of the sighting. The Doppler radar maps did not show anything unusual. The radar sites did show some scattered showers, but the area was well removed from the sighting area. However, Doppler radars are not designed to detect aircraft. The radars have a narrow beam width (one degree) which means that objects will not be detected unless they happen to fly through the narrow beam.

The discussion below makes the assumption that the object(s) seen by the witnesses were detected by radar:

One of the officers said that his thumb would cover up the object. A thumb has a width of 2 arc degrees. (The moon has a width of 30 arc minutes which is about 25% the size of a thumb in apparent width.)  Let’s assume that the object had a width of 1 arc degrees:

Using trigonometry the width of the object would be around 1,650 feet if what the witnesses saw was detected by radar. For comparison purposes the length of a 747 aircraft is 231 feet with a wingspan of 211 feet.

The witnesses thought that the object(s) were at an elevation of 20 to 30 degrees. For computations we will assume that the elevation was 25 degrees. If we assume that the primary radar returns belonged to the object we can say the following:

Using trigonometry if the radar returns represented the object, the elevation would have just over 44,000 feet.

If the returns represent what the witnesses saw the objects would have been quite large and would have been very visible from the Pasco, WA area.  The fact that the time of the sighting was late (around 10 PM on a Sunday night before the week) and the fact that the objects were only visible for a short time may have resulted in fewer (in any) witnesses.  Also there is a possibility that the objects may have appeared larger to the witnesses due to light scattering in the atmosphere which can make objects appear bigger. This is particularly true if objects are lower on the horizon (25 degrees or lower).

Conclusion and Summary:

2 DOC officers saw 2 large orange objects to the Southwest while returning home from work around 10 PM on October 18, 2015.  The officers were near Connell, WA and were returning to the Tri-Cities area. The officers had never before or have since seen the lights.

The lights were near the Hanford Nuclear Facility in Richland, Washington.

Aviation radar data were heavily filtered which eliminates most superfluous returns (birds, weather, ground targets, angels, etc.)
Radar targets were detected in the direction and times when the witnesses saw the objects. The distance was large (around 18 miles).

The radar targets were only visible for 2 periods of time (9:50-9:51 PM & 9:54-9:55 PM) of around one minute. This is consistent with the brief time that the witnesses saw the objects. The radar targets were in a southwesterly direction which is where the witnesses saw the objects.

The targets were moving in a westerly direction at speeds of 38 to 48 MPH and then accelerated to over 300 MPH before vanishing from the scope. The radar detected this from 9:54 to 9:55 PM. This is consistent with the direction of movement reported by the witnesses and closest to the time (9:52 to 9:57 PM).

If the targets represent what the witnesses saw the objects would have flying around 44,000 feet and would have been over 1,500 feet in width.

The witnesses saw multiple targets. Perhaps the targets were so close to one another that the radar only painted one return?

The targets were close to Pasco Airport. One would think that others would have witnessed the objects if the radar targets represented what the witnesses saw due to their large size and proximity to the Pasco area.

Description (In Witness’s Own Words):  The sighting occurred near Cedar Point, Ontario, Canada. I was flying my Citabria airplane at 3500 ft. ASL. The dull silver saucer shaped UFO was first sited over Christian Island as I was banking my aircraft to the right on a level turn. I opened my left side window to watch as the UFO passed approximately 500 ft. underneath my plane. I then banked the plane to the left so that I would not lose sight of it.

The UFO continued on a straight and level path, and although I was going 110 m.p,h. the UFO’s speed was such that there was no way I could catch up to it. If I had to approximate it’s speed, I would guess at 400-600 m.p.h. As for the size of the UFO, I can’t really say, since there was nothing that I could compare it to. If I had to guess, I would say about 30 to 50 feet in diameter. It happened so quickly, but I did get a very good look at it.

There were no windows or any markings on the UFO. The color was a dull silver, almost a grey color. I usually always carry a camera in my side pouch, but this time, it was in a bag behind the rear passenger seat. If I had a passenger with me at that time, I would have been able to get a very good picture with my 35mm camera!

Now when I go flying, I always make sure that I have at least two cameras with me at all times.

Addition Information About Airplane Pilot Was Flying: The aircraft was manufactured by Champion Aircraft CO. in the USA.  The model is a Citabria 7ECA.

Investigator’s Notes: This is an example of a credible witness reporting an incredible sighting.  The witness did not report this sighting previously because he was afraid of ridicule. 

He got a good look at the craft as it approached close to his aircraft.  The sighting occurred near the middle of a bright sunny day.

Description: Hello:
I have just sent you an email that contains a video I captured about two weeks ago on my phone. The video was originally lost in the storage sense area, and I believed the video to have not even been recorded until I happened to find it about a week ago. I tried to send you an email and attach the video. However the file was too large and it wouldn’t send. It said to share with “one drive”, which I hadn’t done before, so I am not sure how it worked out, or if it said it was sent from my email address, etc. Please let me know if you have received the video, and any thoughts, comments, etc. regarding the strange objects. I will attach to this email some still shots captured from the video when it was paused and zoomed in. The first photo is the strobing star thing and the strange floating object underneath was not seen by eye, just on screen, and seems to morph. The second photo shows that the object has moved from underneath the strobing thing directly and is now directly down to the right.

Second Report From Witness: This video was recorded at 4 AM about two weeks ago. I have severe anxiety which tends to keep me up at night. On this particular night, it was a bad attack. I was out of cigarettes and I had my fiancé go to the gas station to buy me some. Before he left, he called me outside to look at a strange, very large and close “star” which seemed to be strobing multiple colors. Immediately, I took out my phone to record, and on the screen I noticed something strange seemed to be floating directly underneath, though I was unable to see this in the sky, only seeing the strobing object. After I had recorded the video, I scrolled back to show him what I had captured, and the video was not there! About a week ago, I noticed that some of the pictures I had taken of my puppy weren’t there after I took them. I searched my phone, and found in the “storage sense” area of my phone (a Nokia Lumia) that the pictures were somehow being sent there instead of saving in their normal album. I also saw that there were some videos, and was shocked to see that the video of the strobing star was there as well! I have watched this video numerous times, even slowing it down, zooming in, etc. I eventually even noticed that there are “hidden frames”, in which you can see actual triangular light formations and what appears to be a circular “ship”. I am not sure what type of technology you have for viewing these things, but any help would be much appreciated, as I would really love to have insight as to what this thing really is.

Note: Like all night videos this video is difficult to analyze. Attempts to change brightness and contrast did not reveal any useful information.

Update – Oct 19, 2015: Analyst David Mason writes: After reviewing the video of the shape changing UFO it’s difficult to make any significant conclusions. The AGC of the video camera was at maximum thus giving image/frame stacking producing time lag which can generate an image that appears to shape shift while a camera is shaking. This image stacking can generate artifacts when directed at a relatively small light source and can be mistaken for something unusual when a video is reviewed.There is severe clipping of the video background as no details can be resolved through extensive histogram stretching. The audio is not present even after using 50 dB of gain. Sometimes the significance of removed audio and video clipping indicates editing.

Although that can happen when video and audio is converted or stored with non compatible formats.

Some cameras will clip a dark background if it falls below a predetermined threshold of CCD and gain noise.

There’s not enough video resolution or enough tangible information from the witness report to confirm the identity of the object.

More Comments From David Mason: This shape shifting UFO video may not be worth further investigation. The object could have been a star or distant aircraft heading directly toward the observer. The elongation of the object could have been the result of debris on the small sized phone lens. Shape shifting can appear to occur when a phone camera is at maximum AGC. There’s just not enough detail to resolve anything noteworthy even if there was audio or if it was shown in standard speed. I did speed up the video in my software, but that did not help.

Description: I am 30 years old and I am from Norway. On Saturday October 10, 2015 I had an experience that I cannot explain. I was a passenger in a car and on my way home from a course in a location called Asker.

I suddenly became aware of a very bright cigar formed object on the sky. Right behind the object a smaller object of the same shape occurred. I was looking at these two objects and I was trying to understand what it was. It was so big, but with no wings and suddenly it disappeared. I was looking around in the sky trying to find it, but the sky was empty. Five Seconds later it suddenly appeared again in the sky, but this time in a new shape and much, much closer to the car I was sitting in. It was V-shaped and upside down if you understand. It was very white and bright but no lights. It was V shaped upside Down and squared like boxes. So I had a 3D sight of it. It was not just a flat thing on the sky, it had mass. (This is in the middle of the day). Behind the biog V it was a smaller V hanging. I was looking at this thing and I was trying to make sense out of it, but I could not understand what it was.

My friend who was driving the car did not see it because she was looking at the road. I was planning to tell her to turn her head around to look at it, but I could not make myself tell her to look. I felt paralyzed by the sight and I was to busy in my head trying to find out what this thing was. And then suddenly it disappeared! The sky was empty again. The big, huge thing was just gone.

When I came home I started to look up pictures on Google and I found this web page with the Woman and her 21 year old son telling her story that is similar to mine. The shape is the same I guess, but the object I saw was an upside down V. And I did see a cigar shaped object first and then it suddenly became V shaped after disappearing and reapparing again. I am just looking for answers. Do you have more information about others seeing stuff like this V shaped thing that I did see this weekend? I have never seen anything like this. The thing was just hanging in the sky. I am just confused. I will be happy if you got more stories like this.

PS: I also attached a drawing on what I did see. Ha ha it is not the best drawing, but this is the best I can do.

Description: I saw this bright white unusual light figured was just star, but on left of the white one was a red star so I thought. And above the white one was like a white/red 1 changing colors so figured was just an airplane, but it would have been gone by time I was moving towards Grantfork from marine. I watched it for 5 minutes.

After I got closer to Grantfork I could see an outline was like a weird shaped triangle outline and you could see it in how slow it was going and I snap chatted it my friend. I didn’t save it. I was freaking out.

I sped up as the UFO I saw gained speed and I started to lose sight. I went through the middle of town on pokey road heading towards Pocahontas. That is when I could barely see the lights. I lost the outline of it about a minute before then. So I started to slow down because I had no chance to get a better video. I started to turn around and drive.

I looked back to check and I saw this small like V shaped, but wider spread of V thing coming had a bright light at the middle where the bottom of the V would be. I sped up because I was in country and wanted to get into town. Looking back I saw the V low with a bright white light at bottom getting close. I came into town down about 85 and slammed on the brakes and got out of car to take a video and it was gone. I freaked out, went home. wish I would have saved the video. I wasn’t thinking and haven’t sketched anything yet.

I try to rationalize what it probably was, but I know what I saw. I am just wondering if any one around here saw anything else either or saw something like it before.

Weather: Few High Clouds. (Per Observation on Photo and Official Weather Observation.) Visibility 9 Miles.

Description: The witness first sent the photo and provided the following one liner regarding the photo:Saw silver object hovering over pier.The witness later provided information about the photo in response to my questions. The photo was taken on the dock beside the Redondo Beach Pier at 150 W. Torrance Blvd. The witness stated that the object was moving north to south at a high rate of speed (similar to jet speed). The object then stopped and hovered for approximately 5 seconds. It was during this time that the witness took the photo. About 2 seconds later the object sped to the south and the witness lost sight of it behind the pier. The camera used was a Kodak Easyshare DX7440 4 megapixel model.

Investigator’s Notes: This photo is one of the best photos that I have seen of a classic silver flying disk. Not only does the photo show a flying saucer, but the flight characteristics described by the witness defy conventional aerial motion because the object was moving rapidly, stopped, hovered, and then sped off. I do not think that the photo is a hoax because the sun position on the disk is on the same side as other objects in the photo. The brightness on the object is consistent with the direction and the time that the photo was taken. Also the camera model, date, and other information was associated with the file sent by the witness. Generally any software editing will remove these attributes which suggests that the photo was sent as output from the camera. (Of course someone could have thrown something in the air and taken a photo of it, but I don’t think that this is the case because the disk is in focus and was likely not moving when the photo was taken.) Photo analysis does not indicate that the object was suspended by any string or other means.
