Credits: Lockheed Martin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The management review, known as Key Decision Point-D (KDP-D), was the last programmatic hurdle for the X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology (QueSST) aircraft to clear before officials meet again in late 2020 to approve the airplane\u2019s first flight in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the completion of KDP-D we\u2019ve shown the project is on schedule, it\u2019s well planned and on track. We have everything in place to continue this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aero\/nasa-moves-to-begin-historic-new-era-of-x-plane-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">historic research mission<\/a>\u00a0for the nation\u2019s air-traveling public,\u201d said Bob Pearce, NASA\u2019s associate administrator for Aeronautics.<\/p>\n<p>The X-59 is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aero\/sonic_boom_takes_shape.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shaped<\/a>\u00a0to reduce the loudness of a sonic boom reaching the ground to that of a gentle thump, if it is heard at all. It will be flown above select U.S. communities to generate data from sensors and people on the ground in order to gauge public perception. That data will help regulators establish new rules to enable commercial supersonic air travel over land.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aero\/nasa-supersonic-x59-quesst-coming-together-at-famed-factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction<\/a>\u00a0of the X-59, under a $247.5 million cost-plus-incentive-fee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-awards-contract-to-build-quieter-supersonic-aircraft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contract<\/a>, is continuing at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/who-we-are\/business-areas\/aeronautics\/skunkworks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skunk Works<\/a>\u00a0factory in Palmdale, California.<\/p>\n<p>Three major work areas are actively set up for building the airplane\u2019s main fuselage, wing and empennage.
