{"id":6745,"date":"2019-01-24T10:30:31","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T10:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theblackvault.com\/documentarchive\/?p=6745"},"modified":"2019-01-24T18:35:37","modified_gmt":"2019-01-24T18:35:37","slug":"uss-pueblo-incident-january-23-1968","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theblackvault.com\/documentarchive\/uss-pueblo-incident-january-23-1968\/","title":{"rendered":"USS Pueblo Incident, January 23, 1968"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p>On January 23, 1968 the USS\u00a0<i>Pueblo<\/i>\u00a0(AGER-2), Auxiliary General Electronic Research Ship, was attacked, boarded and captured by North Koreans in International waters and taken to Wanson Harbor in North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thus the USS\u00a0<i>Pueblo<\/i>\u00a0became the first United States warship captured without a fight since June 22, 1807, when HMS\u00a0<i>Leopard<\/i>\u00a0forced the USS\u00a0<i>Chesapeake<\/i>\u00a0to surrender off the Virginia capes and impressed four of its crew into the British Navy.&#8221; (Brandt, 1969)<\/p>\n<p>During the attack one\u00a0<i>Pueblo<\/i>\u00a0crewman was killed and seven others sustained shrapnel wounds &#8212; two of which were serious. The absence of shredding devices or effective destructive mechanisms made the task of completely destroying the electronic equipment and classified material aboard the ship impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Below you will find documents relating to this incident. Specifically, a few documents obtained from the NSA were obtained after a Mandatory Declassification Review (MDR) request for various records.
