“The widespread crop shortfalls in 1972 and the\u00a0energy and fertilizer crunches in ’73 and ’74 have<\/em><\/strong>
\nraised anew the basic question of whether the production\u00a0of food can keep pace with demand over the\u00a0next few decades. Concern about the capability of\u00a0many of the poorer countries to provide for their\u00a0growing population is widespread and rising. Major\u00a0international conferences planned for the second half\u00a0of this year–i.e., the World Population Conference\u00a0in August and the World Food Conference in November–\u00a0will focus on various aspects of this question.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

There is moreover, growing consensus among\u00a0leading climatologists that the world is undergoing\u00a0a cooling trend. If it continues, as feared, it\u00a0could restrict production in both the USSR and China\u00a0<\/em>among other states, and could have an enormous impact,\u00a0not only on the food-population balance, but also on\u00a0the world balance of power.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

This paper briefly reviews present trends\u00a0and projections for world population and food\u00a0production under assumptions of “normal” weather, and then essays a necessarily tentative exploration\u00a0of the ramifications of a cooling climate. A final\u00a0section address the political and other implications\u00a0for the US of its potential role as the main food\u00a0exporter in an increasingly hungry world.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
