The\u00a0vellum\u00a0on which it is written has been\u00a0carbon-dated\u00a0to the early 15th century (1404\u20131438), and it may have been composed in\u00a0Northern Italy during the Italian Renaissance.\u00a0The manuscript is named after\u00a0Wilfrid Voynich, a Polish book dealer who purchased it in 1912.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Some of the pages are missing, with around 240 remaining. The text is written from left to right, and most of the pages have illustrations or diagrams. Some pages are foldable sheets.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>The Voynich manuscript has been studied by many professional and amateur\u00a0cryptographers, including American and British\u00a0codebreakers\u00a0from both\u00a0World War I\u00a0and\u00a0World War II.\u00a0No one has yet succeeded in deciphering the text, and it has become a famous case in the\u00a0history of cryptography. The mystery of the meaning and origin of the manuscript has excited the popular imagination, making the manuscript the subject of novels and speculation. None of the many hypotheses proposed over the last hundred years has yet been independently verified.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>In 1969 the Voynich manuscript was donated by\u00a0Hans P. Kraus\u00a0to\u00a0Yale University&#8217;s\u00a0Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, where it is cataloged under call number MS 408.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0In June of 2017, I requested from the National Security Agency (NSA) all records they had to The\u00a0Voynich Manuscript.
