Comprised of representatives from various segments of the criminal justice community, including law enforcement, the judiciary, forensic laboratories, and criminal justice professional organizations, the board ensures a broad representation of viewpoints. Members are appointed to the APB to provide diverse perspectives and expertise in matters related to the development and implementation of CJIS services and capabilities.

The APB meets regularly to review and recommend policy, technical, administrative, and operational standards. It also ensures compliance with existing policies and evaluates proposals for new initiatives. By doing so, the APB plays a pivotal role in ensuring that CJIS services remain effective, efficient, and secure, while also balancing the needs of law enforcement with privacy and civil liberty concerns.

The board’s input is vital in shaping the policies and practices that govern how criminal justice information is collected, stored, shared, and used, making it an essential component of the nation’s law enforcement infrastructure.
