I was flying back from Brussels to Edinburgh last night and the sky was completely black apart from one area that was in sunset.

As there was nothing else to look at, I was looking at the nice blend of colours this produced.

I noticed fairly low down on the left-hand side of this area a white/orange light.

My first thought was it was a planet or maybe a star but I couldn't see any other lights stars or planets.

So I was watching it and then I noticed it had was moving slowly to the left.

So I thought maybe it's a satellite.

Then it started moving randomly in all directions.

I thought that maybe vibrations from the plane were making it appear to move, but some of the movement looked too big and there was a cloud in silhouette that wasn't moving in line with the lights movements.

So now I was thinking it must be a reflection on the window from something inside the plane.

So I looked around inside the plane to see what there was in the way of lights and peoples phones etc that would fit the reflection and I couldn't identify anything that matched.

So I then started moving my head around whilst looking at the light to see if it moved in line with other reflections to see if there was something inside the plane that I'd missed.

But it didn't move with the other reflections and could only be outside.

I watched it for another five minutes trying to come up with another explanation.

It was higher up in the sky now from when I'd first noticed it.

I was thinking maybe a planet with the image being distorted by atmospherics or pollution.

At this point, my wife asked me something and I looked away for a second.

When I looked back it had vanished but the plane had not altered course.

If it was a visual distortion of a planet then it should still have been there.

Can anyone tell me what this was?Confused

Thanks for posting this.

Would you like your sighting archived on The Black Vault Case File Database? I can give a bit more detail there, including date, time place etc. and then link over to this discussion. That section also gets a lot of traffic that dont come to the forums.

If you want it added -- send a full, detailed report (feel free to copy and paste this) but include the date, time, exact location etc. to:  reportaufo@theblackvault.com

Sincerely,

I have been doing more research after I realised from news reports that it was the day of the eclipse.

I have worked out that the position of the object fits with the moon and indeed fits with the object getting higher in the sky.

It didn't look anywhere near as big as the moon but was bigger than stars, which is why I originally thought it was a planet.

But I am reasonably satisfied that it must have been the moon being distorted by atmospherics or something like a reflection of the moon.

So I think I'll leave it at that.

In what way?

I saw a light that looked too small to be the moon, bigger than a start, so I concluded it was a planet.

Then it moved unexpectedly and I began trying to figure out why.

I have only concluded it was the moon based on a moon position calculator, in all other respects it did not match the moon.

I am assuming atmospheric distortions and it would be great if someone could confirm this as a possible phenomenon.

But if questioning something you don't understand in order to gain understanding is stupid then I am proud of my stupidity. Cool

I edited the above post, and warned the user. That language is not welcome here.

You continue to question what you don't understand. That's why we are ALL here 🙂

I'm a strong believer in there being no dumb questions and no such thing as failure, only learning opportunities.

So negative comments don't have any effect on me personally, but obviously, it's not good for the atmosphere on the forum.
