Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-Christians, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. The economic impact of Christmas is a factor that has grown steadily over the past few centuries in many regions of the world.

well..that's a positive spin on all the materialism, for sure.
It's like some kind of synchronized, symbiotic, economy saving Christmas miracle.
It's positively...heartwarming.

I like those sorts of values, great little video, pretty much nailed my idea for this topic.
Just reading this..
Of course, Christmas materialism is also stoked by our modern consumer culture. The holiday accounts for about 25 percent of the nation’s annual retail sales. And some of the nation’s retailers are trying to have their Christmas fruitcake and eat it, too. Last year Target told Salvation Army bell-ringers they were no longer welcome on store property. Some stores are telling employees to change their customer greeting from “Merry Christmas” to the more politically correct “Happy Holidays.” Don’t they know the word “holiday” comes from “holy day”?

well i'm not religious although i see that christmas under the right conditions (non commerical) should bee a one day event as it is but a time of peace and understanding, whatever that means to all of us.I think its what should be portrayed..
Marketing/commercialism which has a dominate effect. For a one day event ,which could mean something much more for the worlds consciousness in a postive light i feel like greed (sales and marketing) has the upper hand during these seasons (death and life of a new year) replaced by materialistic value.
It's true that the cultures affected by commercialism are actually moulded ,we don't even realise what teh hell is going on when it's happening right in front of your eyes.
I wonder what it would be like without it..

I use to have this theory, that, living in So-Cal, for so long, I forgot, but now, oh SO remember.
Christmas is, actually, for most people, a coping mechanism, to get through winter.

My mother the other day told me - 'Why and the hell do we put ourselves through
this sh*t, we are all moving south someday, I'm sick of putting myself through another
Minnesotan winter from hell.'
I said 'ah quit Mom, its Christmas'. Think you've got a point Bionic.
In the Northern regions its either Christmas and the Holidays that
get us through it, or a few extra bottles of booze.
Pharmaceuticals probably cap out in sales in the Northern Hemisphere come
fall every year.
We're tough in the North.
I usually pump gas in a tshirt when its 30 below...and start sweating
when hits 30 above. Yet I'm comfortable again if it hits above 90...can
hardly sweat in a sauna, too many times in a sweat lodge.
Guess I like extreme weather.

astonishment. “I never heard of such a thing!”

memory works both ways.”
