The Gorgon Gas Project off the north west coast of Australia has been highlighted at climate talks in Copenhagen.

Chevron plans to inject carbon dioxide emissions from the project, into massive subsea aquifers to prevent it going into the atmosphere, under a process known as Carbon Capture and Storage.

Corporate lawyer with Minter Ellison, Cheryl Edwardes, is in Copenhagen as an observer, and she says Australia's two-billion-dollar commitment to developing CCS technology has been a hot topic.

"Gorgon investment in the carbon capture and storage was highlighted as one of the few around the world of a private sector actually being prepared to commit to this new technology," she says.

"If it becomes part of the new agreement companies can actually invest in developing countries to earn units against their tonne of carbon."
