SR: Another Movie I never get tired of watching and a damned sight better than the Will Smith version from 2007....

From Wikipedia....

The story occurs in 1977, two years after biological warfare between the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union kills most of the world's human population with biological weaponry (the escalation is shown in flashback and the date March 1975 is indicated by a tattered calendar). U.S. Army Colonel Robert Neville, M.D. (Charlton Heston) โ€” a military scientist โ€” begins to succumb to the plague, and moments before death, in desperation he vaccinates himself against the plague with experimental vaccine 93-B71, which renders him immune.

In Los Angeles, several hundred biologically resistant albinos calling themselves "The Family" survive the plague - however, they have become deranged, violent, nocturnal, photophobic mutants, and the plague has provoked psychoses and delusions of grandeur. Despite being resistant, members of The Family are dying, perhaps because the plague is mutating.

The Family's leader is Jonathan Matthias (Anthony Zerbe) โ€” a popular Los Angeles television news anchorman whom the plague has transformed into a dangerous, rhetoric-spewing psychotic. He and The Family believe that the war - and their diseased state - is the direct result of science. Therefore, The Family has become Ludditic. Clad in black robes, they use medieval imagery and only the most primitive technologies, including torches, bows, arrows and catapults, to destroy every vestige of science and technology they can find. They see Dr. Neville as a "user of the wheel" - the last remnant of the culture of science they seek to erase - and make it their goal to see him dead.

Col. Neville lives atop a fortified apartment building equipped with an arsenal (Smith & Wesson M76 submachine gun, infrared sight-equipped Browning Automatic Rifle, satchel charges). By day, he scavenges for supplies while searching for The Familyโ€™s nest among the deserted city's buildings. At night, Neville illuminates his building and the surrounding area with floodlights to deter The Family's attempts to kill him, but they still clamor outside, burning books and other cultural artifacts, taunting and attacking Neville whenever they can.

SR: Even though the Neville Character represents the Military Industrial Complex that succors the JBT mentality, he does display some Libertarian Qualities by watching WOODSTOCK and depending on himself to defend his home with every weapon imaginable...

Kudos to Anthony Zerbe as Matthias who embodies the Socialist Overlord Mentality by ruling through fear and ignorance, Paul Koslo as Dutch (Love that Flip The Bird Biker Jacket Dude !) who heads a group of kids who look like they walked over from the set of THE BRADY BUNCH and the Late by Lovable Rosalind Cash who could wipe up L.A. with Matthias and the Family if she had a decent chance...

One of the best lines has to be from Heston when captured by Matthias and his "Family"....

Neville: Tell me something, would you? Are you fellas really with the Internal Revenue Service?

So go out and Rent the DVD or catch it on Cable !

SouthwestRanger -- one of my absolute favorite movies ever ... loved it as a kid and still love it ... it was years before i ever saw the complete version ... there was a daily movie out of chicago (channel 7 abc affiliate) that had the 3:30 movie Monday thru Friday ... the problem was that the news started at 5 and with about half an hour of commercials you got to see about a 60 to 70 cutup version of movies ... so there was a lot of this movie i didn't see until i took a scifi lit/movie course in college ... it was cool to see it on a (pretty big) big screen and i got the dvd from amazon a couple years ago ... also sent a copy to my brother who was as excited as me lol

great film ... the music is outstanding and really sets and fits the mood ... it is the best version of the I Am Legend novella (the other two being the will smith on as you mentioned and the oldest version, 'the last man on earth' starring vincent price) ...

most people now don't even remember a time when charlton heston was cool ... but when you think about it, he made three pretty great scifi movies ... 'planet of the apes', 'soylent green', and 'omega man' ๐Ÿ™‚

take care :)

Well, this is my first on this forum (as I carefully dip my toe in the waters, so to speak) and I'm really glad to start off by commenting on one of my favourite movies... ever.

Whenever I'm asked what my favourite movies are, I always mention this and Silent Running. (and Somewhere In Time, because I'm a softie ๐Ÿ˜€ ) Invariably, I get puzzled looks in response.

One good thing about the Will Smith version (which was okay, I didn't hate it) is that I now have a frame of reference for people. "You know the Will Smith movie where he was the last man alive? Well, it's like that. Only better. And with Charlton Heston!"

lmao you're safe posting anything in my book as long as you like both omega man AND silent running ๐Ÿ˜€ w00t -- hewey, dewey, and louie rock ๐Ÿ™‚

i've never understood why they change the ending from the book to the movie ... i really thought the will smith version would do the 'right' ending ... both endings left me deflated lol ...

heston's dying scene is hard to beat for most any movie tho ... the nice crucifixion-pose, hand floating lifeless in bloody-water ... nice ๐Ÿ™‚

and yeah, you might want to hide in a room by yourself when you watch somewhere in time ๐Ÿ˜‰ lol ... nah nice movie, cool concept, and very well done, well acted ... nicely paced, never drags ๐Ÿ™‚ but a bit woosy ๐Ÿ˜‰ lmao

welcome aboard btw ๐Ÿ™‚

take care :)
