Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
A body + the breath of life= soul
Whatever the definition, there appears to be an aspect of conscious self that can exist outside the physical body.

I suppose the question is "what is the spirit?" there is no need to quibble over definitions of words when the meaning was clear from the context of the very first post. :boohoo:
So, what is a spirit? Consciousness appears to be independent of physical form, at least from the testimony of many people with near death experiences.
Spirits could be holographic patterns that are not within the spectrum of visible light. I don't know...

Well, according to Halfabo's comments, a spirit is what can exist outside the physical body and it is not a soul, therefore the spirit is not the true self.
BUT... the Bible clearly states that the body is not eternal but the spirit is eternal. It would appear that the spirit is MORE real[as far as being a true self] than the body.
