I have just looked and the population of this small rock is about 7.75 billion and it is set to double in less than 100 years and double again in about another 50 to 31 billion. Sorry, but I really don't think that poor Planet Earth can support that many people. Food will not be a problem because there will not be any room to grow it. Even if we suddenly develop gills and move into the oceans there will not be enough room.

What are we doing about it?

Well we have a religion that is against all forms of contraception, except abstance. We have a medical profession that is giving fertility treatment to anyone who asks for it (and can pay) and if they can't pay then they can always find someone to have a child on their behalf. Only this week I read of a couple both in their 60s, in England, who had a child with a surrogate mother, at least someone had some sense and took the child off them, but that doesn't reduce the population.

We must do something to stop this insane need to procreate until the population is under control. China did try restricting families to two children, which did work and when their population was more under control they lifted the restriction.

We can't do anything unless ALL countries agree and take action, but I can't see Italy agreeing with the Pope living there (yes I know that the Pope technically lives in Vatican City) and I would be amazed if the African nations agreed and that is before we even think about the Muslim countries. A previous Pope stated that the aim of the Catholic Church was to have every person in the world as part of the Catholic faith, funny but I don't see the Muslim Clerics allowing that to get even close to comming about.

How about locking up every person who has more than one child on the grounds of child cruelty? Lets face it I wouldn't want my great grandchildren growing up in a world that is standing room only. Anyone remember the episode of Star Trek where people didn't die of disease but lived long lives and kept breeding?

So how do we slow down, or preferably stop the increase in world population?

First we must stop the fertility treatment, having a child is not a human right. We must also consider steralizing anyone, male or female, after the birth of their second child. The world can no longer enjoy the luxury of families of six or seven children or more. No one country can do this, only all countries acting together have a chance of bringing this mess under control or else we will never survive to die from Global Warming, exploding Sun or any pandemic.

I am nearing the end of my life. My one child is in middle age and her only daughter has no children, not because of population but as lifestyle choices. I am glad that I am in the second half of my 60s and not just being born.

Good luck to your children's children's children.CryConfused

Sorry, but that's very wrong. First, you can't apply your reasoning to the US because the US has a decreasing population. That's why it has to import large numbers of immigrants just to break even.  Its mostly 3rd world countries that have "overpopulation" but that will cease on its own, because as countries develop from being 3rd world, their population growth will dwindle.  The world does not need you to put people in jail for having children.  That's nutty and evil.  And stop blaming religion for the acts of individual people. Besides, they have relented on contraception.

And the planet does not need you to save it.  The planet does not care what humans do. Earth will outlast humans by a long margin and it will renew itself and even eventually eliminate all the plastic and nuclear waste.  Most of the environmental "problems" are only a problem for humans. Earth doesn't care.  Its been a lot hotter than now and its been a lot colder than now and that cycle will continue.  Not good for you however.

And remember from elementary school science class that starvation is how nature controls populations.  Oh wait, they probably replaced that with the "How to be a good Marxist" class.

I'd have to agree with Alalu.  You worry needlessly about something you cannot and should not change. The kind of change you propose is part of the lore behind the "Elites" and "Illuminati" to reduce the earth's population down to 1/2 Billion, and if your not one of them, then you can imagine what your job is going to be. 😉

The earth will always resolve any issues it has with anything that becomes a blight to it.  That is what viruses, CME, global floods, Pole reversals are for.  It does speak to the need to be good stewards though if you want any kind of lasting legacy.

I've often wondered if we are not the first iteration of humanoids on this planet.  Any previous version could easily have been wiped clean by the tectonic etch-a-sketch nature of subduction zones.
