Men Look for Good Bodies in Short-Term Mates, Pretty Faces in Long-Term Mates
ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2010) — Men who are looking for short-term companionship are more interested in a woman's body than those looking for a long-term relationship, who focused on a woman's face, according to new research from psychologists at The University of Texas at Austin.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A woman's body generally provides cues about her state of fertility while her face gives insight into her long-term reproductive value, according to previous research. So the new findings suggest men seeking a short-term relationship have psychological adaptations to look for partners who are fertile and can produce offspring.

"Men's priorities shift depending on what they want in a mate, with facial features taking on more importance when a long-term relationship is the goal," says psychology graduate student Jaime Confer, who co-authored the research with graduate student Carin Perilloux and Professor David Buss. "Mating is central to the engine of natural selection. This research helps clarify people's preference."

Women showed no significant difference in their interest in faces or bodies when looking for short-term or long-term mates, according to the study published this month in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior.

Previous research has examined the qualities that make faces and bodies attractive, such as symmetry and waist-to-hip ratio. But this is the first study to experimentally analyze the relative importance of faces and bodies as whole components.

As part of the study, 375 college students were shown an image of another person, whose face and body was hidden, who was described as either a potential short-term or long-term mate. The participants had the option of looking at either head or body, but not both.

Twenty-five percent of men who were told to consider the mate as a long-term partner looked at their potential partner's body. In contrast, 51 percent of those who were told to consider her as a short-term partner chose to look her body.

Confer and her colleagues are considering follow-up research in which participants will be asked if they want to see the faces or bodies of potential rivals who may be stealing their mates. That could help reveal if men and women feel more threatened by a pretty face or a good body.

Is it just me that finds this study absolutely ridiculous or what?
What kind of people are they doing these studies with? Laugh

More suggestions that men are very visual, well how about intuitive.
Because that is one of the more misleading things out there, that men
are less intuitive. Men are extremely intuitive, they just like us ladies to
believe they are not, kind of like telling us, 'don't worry I'm not looking'
and everytime you know they're looking. Laugh
Men are just much more sly about these things.
They go undetected. Laugh
Women showed no differences in the study, well I am sure men
from visuals can absorb more information than a hip to waist ratio.

To be fair, not all men fit in a nice simple little paragraph.
("IMO" it is insulting to say they do, just as it is insulting to say all women fall into as simplistic a category.)

Let me tell you of my internet experiences.

I have found that romance in chat rooms can be more honest than in real person... allow to explain

Assuming both parties are honest (yeah, I know) all you know about the other person is what they say, i.e. what and how they think. You see, in "real life" looks make a MAJOR influence on how people interact. In chat, you have no idea what they look like so your only choice is to view them from what they say. In the real world both men and women ignore a lot of faults if the other person is very attractive to them.

Probably similar things..though..I think women..whether they are conscious of it or not..single women are always looking for potential longterm mates..even in obviously short term ones..that's why you see so many gals stick with guys that obviously aren't in it for the long term.

I think the same might be the opposite for guys..they are looking for a short term girl..even in one that deep down they might think it for the long hall...and might even sabatage something that would have been long term..somply form fear of it going that way

but these are general sweeps..which was pointed out, are really unfair

about guys, bodies and short term gals..it was guys that came up with the term
"bag her head"

so....

I remember always giving tk a hard time due to his heavy ganja usage though I was always impressed with you. That was a while back in the previous incarnation of the bv discussion forum. Seems like a few people from back then have joined recently. I think it's great. I lot of house-cleaning has occurred to the bv since then. Oddly enough, I do not remember seeing Sandra there in that version of the board. Perhaps I was unready to meet her then.
I found this board because I asked Malai, who I met on a Michio Kaku forum, what other boards he was on. Anyways, I digress. What I look for is a bright bundle of love, kindness, and gentleness. Sometimes the amount of what I want is overwhelming in what I have.

What's kinda neat is that people who are focused can be strong yet small, like Bruce Lee. I have a friend who is much smaller than me but probably stronger than I am.
But, yeah... That is Sandra to me as well.

I look for both , I'm greedy that way...

actually, I usually look for independent , smart, career driven women. Unfortunately the career thing usually means no time to date.

So now I just look for model types with all looks, that leads to a lot of fights though. 🙄 Women ?
