Don’t Blame the Politicians

By George Carlin

“Where do people think these politicians come from?  They don’t fall out of the sky, they don’t pass through a membrane from another reality, they come from American parents, American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses, American universities, and elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks! This is what we have to offer, this is what our system produces, garbage in garbage out.  If you have selfish ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish ignorant leaders. Term limits ain’t going to do any good; you’re just going to wind up with a brand-new set of selfish ignorant Americans.  So maybe, maybe, maybe it’s not the politicians who suck!”

George Carlin was a very funny guy, and made a lot of analogies that were true for the day. Comedy is pretty much valid to a particular period of time, era, or generation. Political comedy is valid pretty much for the times you are in or current events around when the comedy is said.  The above was very true enough in that period, but today all the things listed, parents, families, homes and schools, churches, businesses, and especially Universities are completely changed. Georges sentiment may still be the same, but all these things have evolved and are a different mind set today.  In Georges heyday, extreme liberal issues were not like they are today. Political correctness was not a obsession, We were not obsessed with playing victim or in some oppressed way of life, we were not divided like today. There was no ideal of a cancel culture obsession, you were not demonized for Christian beliefs,  we had no internet, no cell phones, The American things George refers to and completely different today.

There is a proverb I'm sure you have heard before from Alphonse Karr "The more things change, the more they stay the same." Even though George Carlin has been gone for awhile his observations in my opinion are still relevant and maybe even more so today! For reasons I cannot fathom why people in general do not want hear constructive criticisms about themselves. They want to hear the lies that politicians tell them so that the politicians can garner their votes.

The "culture of convenience" in the Industrial societies has produced "hedonistic" mind-set that has been internalized by populace. People are no longer vigilant as long as they can consume "stuff" that they desire. With this pursuit of "stuff" we have relinquished authority to a minority of individuals who may not have the populations best interest at heart. Whats even worse people no longer want to question those in power for fear of reprisals.

In the United States we have become brainwashed into believing that being a good citizen is one who votes and waves the flag. A good citizen is one who tries to be vigilant. What this means is that one tries to be as well informed as possible. The American people have allowed themselves to be "dumbed downed" to the point that they no longer know enough to ask germane questions to the "powers that shouldn't be."  In the final analysis the American people must critically reflect on what kind of society they have created. Until this is done the United States of America will continue on its downward spiral.

"The more things change, the more they stay the same." definitely true, and I said Georges sentiment was still the same, but times have changed drastically. I think we agree how much things have changed. A lot of truth to that for sure.

Yes to the American allowing themselves to be "dummy down", what did we expect?  We put a cell phone into every kid, that becomes part of their human body, with the ability to do a major report searching that phone, not a trip to the library to check out books and read.  We are an instant gratification society from the microwave to our home entertainment centers with 1000 channels, and texting 5 words on our cell phones to facebook is the extent of how much time we will spend doing something.  Our political opinions are more from seeing a stupid MEME, and that becomes gospel.

I am older now, and happen to believe in some of these old things like standing for the National Anthem, being proud to fly my flag on my house, and voting. I'm not brainwashed.

Yeah, I get that blame should start with us, the people; myself especially, no delusions about that.  However, there is the difference that they chose the path of "public service" with regular, nonpolitical citizens relying on their integrity and honesty.

Carlin was a laugh riot, one of the best.  He was a candid atheist and i hope he is witness now to all the truth.

Your gotcha "repost" has inspired conversation, kudos, but i have a GOTCHA post on the other channel...
