The Lincoln Memorial was shut down Friday morning after vandals splashed the statue of the nation’s 16th president and the marble floor around it with green paint, U.S. Park Police said.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the popular tourist attraction on the west end of the Mall, but so far they have released no information about who may have been responsible or the motivation for the attack.
Authorities believe the vandalism happened about 1:30 a.m. The National Park Service will work to clean up the paint, police said, and the memorial will be closed to the public until cleanup is complete.
Police said no words or symbols had been painted or written on the memorial, only splatters of green paint. No damage was reported at the Mall’s other memorials and monuments.
The neo-classical memorial to the president who emancipated the slaves was designed by Henry Bacon and modeled after an ancient Greek temple. The 19-foot tall statue depicts Lincoln sitting in a throne-like chair, gazing toward the Washington Monument and, further east, the Capitol.
Inscribed in the walls around the statue are excerpts of the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln’s second inaugural address. The memorial is surrounded by 36 fluted Doric columns, representing the 36 states at the time of Lincoln’s assassination.
The memorial, which opened to the public in 1922 and draws millions of visitors each year, has been the site of major moments in U.S. history.
Marian Anderson sang there on Easter Sunday in 1939, after her scheduled performance at the nearby Constitution Hall was canceled because she was black.
Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech there on Aug. 28, 1963, at the culmination of the movement’s March on Washington. Events are planned at the memorial next month to commemorate the 50th anniversary of that rally and speech.
The memorial has also been the site of concerts to celebrate presidential inaugurations, including the inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009 as the nation’s 44th president and the first African American to hold the office.

I totally agree.
I am all for everyone having their political points of view, their ideas, their disagreements, and their problems with whatever they have a problem with; and by all means, SPEAK OUT about it. That's one of the many things that is great about our country. But if you feel the need to deface an American icon; deface a person that played a role in shaping our great country... then GET OUT. You obviously don't want to be here and quite frankly (and I am sure I speak for many) we don't want you here.
I hope they catch whomever did this, and I hope they prosecute to the fullest. Because dumb, idiotic actions like this is simply pathetic and show such a lack of character, a lack of worth, and a lack of intelligence.

AT 66 years old or any age, this act should cause disgust and sadness, that we have these elements in our society, they stoop to every level possible to shock the world. Who and why would anyone do this unless it pertains to recent news or conservatory, that this is some sort of statement. Is this some statement about racism? Or some statement about some other political position, and will any group come forward to take responsibility? Or is it just the act of kids out doing vandalism with no message or agenda whatsoever?
The Trevon Martin Case certainly is a emotionally charged issue, and it does not make matters better to hear our President jabber more about the emotional black reactions to the verdict, rather than to talk about the jury system and how it did its job, regardless of the outcome, the trial was not an unfair trial. If anything the prosecution proved it had a hard time making a case. It also did not help to have a juror come forward, making statements "Zimmermann got away with murder" when the deliberation of that trial was within her hands. This is why a jury deliberates, and why they come to a concenceous and verdict. She had the option to be the lone holdout and come back with a hung jury. In that case we would be looking at a new trial, but they ruled Not Guilty. Is this why the monument was defaced?
In the past 10 years or more, the USA has given up many or our National Parks to the UN control. Just another symbol of America giving away America. Burn the flag, deface the Lincoln Memorial, tagging the rocks in Yosemite, or just carving your initials in one of those grand campground picnic tables, just ways of spitting on your country. Yes it makes me sick, and a real slap in the face to those who have always loved and cared for their country. Worn a uniform in our armed forces, or given to some efforts to make our country great. I certainly hope they catch these people.

Even more sad are those who come only to destroy us. That those who are even born here, and are citizens, have given up to only take, stand in line for all the give outs, and give nothing in return. A society of thinking they are entitled by birth, and never have to give back. Those who go from one welfare program to another, know how to play the game in every federal, state, and local program to just be parasites, and are the first to be protesting the evils of Washington, or how unfair life is for them.

I'll give you one word on why she came out and said what she did AFTER the fact: "Money."
She is going to get paid for all the interview. She will sign a book deal (if she hasn't already) and she will make tons of cash banking on the "trial of 2013". Next year, there will be another trial that catches the media -- but this moron is going to ride the wave as long as she can. And to do so, she starts with the *gasp* comment of the day. But like you said, if she was strong in her conviction -- she should have held true to it, but she didn't. Not because she's weak, but if she really was sequestered, she may not have thought about all the money she could make again, until AFTER the fact.
At least how she was in the jury room, was how a jury should be. And they judged accordingly. After the fact, her opinion and, in MY opinion, money hunger got the best of her.
Enjoy your 15 minutes, Juror number whatever you are.
