We are witness again to a surge of interest in,\u00a0and speculation about, extra-terrestrial radio transmissions\u00a0I which had an earlier flare in the late\u00a0twenties. The favourable change in climate for\u00a0the expression of such ideas since the turn of the\u00a0century has been of particular interest to me<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1899, Nikola Tesla established an experimental\u00a0station at Colorado Springs, where he would be free\u00a0to pursue certain electrical investigations, unrestrained by the limits imposed by his New York\u00a0City laboratory. In an article by him, published\u00a0after his return to New York in the following year,\u00a0he presented a rather thrilling account of signals\u00a0received while alone one night at\u00a0the experimental\u00a0station:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

“The changes I noted were taking place periodically,\u00a0and with such a clear suggestion of number\u00a0<\/em>and order that they were not traceable to any cause\u00a0then known to me. I was familiar, of course with\u00a0such electrical disturbances as are produced by the\u00a0sun, Aurora Borealis and earth currents, and I was\u00a0as sure as I could be of any fact that these variations\u00a0were due to none of these causes. . . . It was some\u00a0time afterward when the thought flashed upon\u00a0my mind that the disturbances I had observed\u00a0might be due to intelligent control. . . The feeling\u00a0is constantly growing on me that I had been the\u00a0first to hear the greeting of one planet to another. . . .\u00a0<\/em>I announced to the Red Cross Society, when it asked\u00a0me to indicate one of the great possible achievements of the next hundred years, that it would probably\u00a0be the confirmation and interpretation of this\u00a0planetary challenge to us.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I have acquired the original of Tesla’s statement\u00a0to the Red Cross Society, dated Christmas (January\u00a07), 1900, which I believe is the first expression of\u00a0the possibility of radio communication with other\u00a0planetary communities. The announcement was\u00a0harshly criticized. This was particularly unfortunate\u00a0since, because of such attacks, Tesla never produced\u00a0detailed information concerning the results of his\u00a0intended investigations and the chance reception\u00a0of signals.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
