Taxi firm boss "mesmerised" by fast-moving silent orange orb floating over Newbury

Taxi firm boss Bill Annetts and a colleague were “mesmerised” by a strange orange orb which appeared to be rising into the night sky on Saturday.

Mr Annetts, general manager of local firm Kenikabs, was near his home in Burys Bank Road, Newbury, when he saw the object. He said: “My colleague said it was Venus because it is very bright in the night sky at the moment. But then the light moved quickly upwards.

“I really don’t know what it was. There was no noise so it wasn’t a plane and it was moving too quickly for a lantern with a light in it.”

He added: “It was quite large and moving very fast. I wonder if anyone else saw it or can explain what it was. We watched it move upwards from the south of Newbury travelling northwards for two or three minutes, at least, before it disappeared from view.”

The area has been a hotspot for unexplained aerial phenomena over the years dating as far back as 1909, when an organist from St Michael’s Church in Lambourn spotted a shape coming from the East that he said intermittently let off loud explosions. UFO expert Steve Harris of the Newbury Amateur Astronomical Society offered one possible explanation - space junk. He said: “I have actually seen spacecraft returning to earth before. When you see things that are glowing as they go through the atmosphere it is generally spacecraft or space junk.”
