A still from the film of Sharon Rowlands

At 21.15 on October 5 2000, in Bonsall in Derbyshire, near Matlock, Sharon Rowlands noticed a large luminous object, with a shimmering pink colour, hovering and rotating over a nearby field. She had the presence of mind to capture many minutes of the object on a camcorder.

Few other UFO sightings in the UK have been recorded for so long. The video she made is slightly out-of-focus as she tries to zoom in closer to the object, as it moved, but from the video, several stills were made which unmistakably show an object not of a terrestrial origin.

She reported it to her local newspaper, the Matlock Mercury, and from there it gained a wider and more international audience. Mrs Rowlands was no authority on astronomical events or NASA's space exploration program, so when shots from the video showed an object that had been seen apparently before in space from the Space Shuttle, this alerted the antennae of experts of UFOs and researchers at NASA.

On February 28 1996, on the STS-75 Space Shuttle mission, after a tethered $100m Italian satellite had drifted from the Space Shuttle on February 25, Claude Nicoltier filmed the satellite tens of miles away. There appeared an anomalous object similar to the one seen later by Sharon Rowlands.

If the two objects are analysed, there are distinctive features to the circular object that are almost identical. Although both are circular, each has a similar indentation on a section of its outer circumference. The diameters of the inner circular ridges on both structures and at their centres, can be measured and expressed as a percentage of the total diameter. If these two objects were indeed connected, it could be expected that these physical characteristics would be similar, extremely unlikely as it may be.

For both objects, the ratio of the outer diameter to the diameters of physical ridges or troughs on both objects are the same, to a closeness of 0.3%. The measurements from the blurred pictures will introduce errors, yet every physical feature of both craft are bizarrely found in exactly the same position to fractions of a percentage point. There is nothing else connecting these two objects except for the extremely unexpected fact that they share the same physical proportions, a remote coincidence.
