Has anyone watched the Series "Fabric of the Cosmos" hosted by Brian Greene? It was on PBS the other day and a portion of it talked about what is called the Holographic Principle or HologrpahicTheory.
Now this all sounds very far-fetched, unreal, or like a sci-fi movie but apparently it is based on the study black holes.
It goes something like this:
If you were to throw an object at a black hole (for example, an apple) that apple would head toward the black hole at an accelerating rate. Now, the common thought is that the apple would be consumed by the black hole and spit back out at the other end. However, this new theory suggests that all the information that is contained in that apple would be distributed over the surface of the black hole. So the apple would exist simply as information on the surface of the 2 dimensional perimeter of the black hole. However, inside the black hole (or, in some other dimension), the apple would exist as a 3 dimensional representation of the 2 dimensional information. So, this is to say, that the 3D apple does not exist, but its the 2D information is the only physical existence of the apple. The 3D apple is simply a hologram projected by the 2D information.
Now the crazy part is that this theory suggests that everything is actually 3 Dimensional representations of 2 Dimensional information that exists on the surface of a blackhole that we all live within. So, basically, everything we can see is actually just a hologram. It's like we all live in the Matrix.. well, sort of.
Just a strange concept that I felt like sharing.
