The Obama administration will no longer defend a federal law that bans recognition of same-sex marriage, marking a major legal reversal that reinvigorates a national debate over gay rights.

"While Americans want Washington to focus on creating jobs and cutting spending, the president will have to explain why he thinks now is the appropriate time to stir up a controversial issue that sharply divides the nation," said Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Republican House Speaker John Boehner.
"Be as wise as a serpent and as innocent as a dove."
