"Irresponsible" that phrase adequetly covers certain current US nuclear plants upkeep and safety records and the people who are involved in those aspects.

The security risks aren't just bad upkeep, the security risk starts right at the mine, refining plants, various modes of transportation, the plant itself, the waste material waste storage, 1000s of employees. You just don't get catastrophic risks (nuclear war, nuclear meltdown, radioactive contamination, nuclear terrorism. ) like nuclear ones with the various alternative energy sources.

Australia has around 25% of the world's reserves of thorium, and a significant amount of the world's reserves of uranium, 40% of it in fact.

why is Australia still moving forword on thorium reactors.

Good question.

They are safer then nuclear reactors, so Australia should do it right.

But Australia has 40% of the world's reserves of uranium.

But thorium is cleaner.

Maybe it has more to do with the technology, of the Liquid Fluoride Thorium reactor.
& it's other uses.

& less to do with the waste itself.
