My cell phone is probably 10 times better than that piece of equipment. Amazing isn't it?

A large solar flare, hitting the Earth would cause a massive electromagnetic pulse that would wipe out the power grid and all electrical technology. Even automobiles would be useless with burned out circuits and wires.
