Official: To require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service, either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, to authorize the induction of persons in the uniformed services during wartime to meet end-strength requirements of the uniformed services, and for other purposes. as introduced.

Will it pass? Probably not.

Will it affect me? No...solly cholly, been there, done that, too old now.

Will we see busted-up middle aged men doing front-line service? Maybe a few Uber-Jocks and Muscle-Mutts, but I don't see Uncle Sam passing out Aleve & Prevacid for combat troops. Viagra, maybe...

How about druggies with their fingers on the Doomsday button? Methinks it took druggies to invent such a concept, so: No change.

Does the prospect bother me? Nope, sorry. While the number of possible exemptions from general service will be less than those for military service, there will still be exemptions; given that non-military service options are included, think of it as getting a 'fat Government job' handed to you on a silver platter.
