I know that Canadian health care works differently than that. Doesn't your government own all the insurance companies?


No, I don't think so. I don't have any health insurance, but I'm a Canadian citizen so I am covered by the health care system, which is simply paid for with taxes from the government budget.

No insurance company required.

As Canadian citizens, we do have basic government health insurance, but to have any extra "perks" you need to pay for additional insurance that covers things like a private room, lost pay, etc. through an insurance provider. The extent of this health insurance is also dependent on which province you reside in (different provinces have different degrees of coverage).
