Ok a while ago in a rare moment of clarity it occurred to me that seeing as how birds evolved from reptiles .... and never once stopped laying eggs through the whole process it would appear the egg would obviously come before the chicken

uummm ... wouldn't it rather simply change the entire concept to "there was no egg, chickens evolved from reptiles that came first" ?
i dunno ... it's monday morning and my nazi boss is already chewing me a new ***hole ... i really hope the world ends soon -- or i win the lottery -- about the same odds for either event i think

Well not really ... because reptiles were laying eggs before they were reptiles when they were fish. Then they were laying eggs all the way through the evolution of reptiles and into birds and they are still laying them ..... so even if it was what came first reptile or egg I'd still answer egg for the same reason but it's not it's the chicken or egg and I reckon it's the egg that came first .... to me this solution seems pretty straight forward and when I had this thought I posted it on the old vault as I couldn't find a reference to this solution anywhere else ... just references to it being an unanswerable question. It was this that I found strange ... I'm certainly no genius and highly doubt I'm the first to think of this solution ...but never the less I do believe it's a solution.

in truth, an egg is just an embryonic chicken
the chicken IS the egg..the egg IS the chicken

Seen through a scanning electron microscope, embryonic scales in reptiles begin as tiny rudimentary feathers - the structure is the same. Both are body coverings.
Reptiles' scales always had the genetic potential for feathers to develop... but they didn't until flight became an advantage to survival, I suppose.
