realistically it IS NOT impossible for life to breed or come into existence under the conditions of the sewers.
think about the antibiotics, other meds, being flushed with urine, think of the pets flushed, think of natural bacteria and organisms.....its possible.

Like Panda mentioned, sewers are probably perfect places for some kind of new or mutated life form to come about.

It could some kind of bacteria-like lifeform that was just left to grow and evolve.

Kind of like that old take-out food left in the fridge and forgotten for too long....lol
