Are MP3s or other facsimiles reliable enough not to have to back up music files? Should I have a backup?

At the very least you should have a list of all the MP3s that you have, and a back-up of the rare ones. You know, ones that took you a long time to find, or you had to rip them from Youtube, or something.

Just in case you get a virus or something that shuts your computer down.

Actually, so far there're only copies of my own CD's. I wouldn't want to rip all those CDs again. Thats why I asked.

external HD's are fairly cheap nowadays.
Just get one and copy the files over.
Makes for a decent backup for ya.

Actually, its a "in the future" type of question. I already back them up into an 8 Gig Jump Drive just in case the 2 Gig GPX audio player proves to be unreliable. I don't want to have to Rip all those CD's again and I don't want them clogging up my computer either.
