And of the nearly 46 million U.S. adults who reported having had a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder when surveyed in 2010, some 60% didn't receive any treatment for the condition.

Are these people diagnosing themselves?

just 5% reported having serious issues that interfered with their normal activities.

The findings emphasize the need for mental health treatment specialists to address substance use disorders, and to more extensively integrate mental health and substance use treatment centers, the researchers wrote.

In other words, more money need be spent on behavior-modification schemes.

20%. Is that credible?

20% is incredibly low.

I'd believe 99.20%. You and me included.

8-)

Disorder seems to entail abnormality and the majority can't be abnormal can it?

As popular as reality tv is, I can see where one in five might be considered mentally ill.

Does this mean that 20% of the vote is mentally ill? I mean, how does that compare to other minorities?

Is autism considered a mental illness?

I've seen previews for that and it looks pretty sweet.
Back on subject... I wonder how well correlated so called mental illness is with so called intelligence and creativity.
Both are hard to measure thus getting a real correlation would be problematic.

The criteria for depression are being reviewed by the American Psychiatric Association, which is finishing work on the fifth edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or D.S.M., the first since 1994. The manual is the standard reference for the field, shaping treatment and insurance decisions, and its revisions will affect the lives of millions of people for years to come.
