Are you trying to subtley get into negative numbers, here?
most of me is confused, yet some tiny part,I am not quite in touch with, I think, is starting to..I dunno..something.."get it"..it not being quite the term I'd use, yet, at least.

I always saw nine as a sort of, line of demarcation..which I guess one is, obviously..from zero to one..wow..but nine comes before zero, in a way, comes before one

The rules say that positive times negative is negative, negative times positive is negative, and negative times negative is positive. There is, of course, a perfectly good rationale behind those rules.
There was a guy on the Colbert Report, I forget his name, and he had posted thousands of lessons on youtube. Colbert quipped, "and negative numbers don't exist because I can't hold negatively many apples." Or something to that effect. The guest laughed as did I.

How many apples arn't there? Maybe all negative numbers are equal, and no such thing?

all I know is if I ask for change for $1, I better not get .90 cents. Or someones head will be getting rounded off.

This is why I never ended up a math major.

Keep in mind that .9 and .(9) are totally different and .(9) isn't equal to 1 because anything is being rounded or estimated.

Negative numbers are equivalent to a subtraction...

My son in law, and his Father both have Masters Degrees in Mathmatics, they could probably understand this, I'm out of my element on it totally.
