Osama bin Laden...dead

Postby at1with0 » Tue May 03, 2011 1:22 pm

Taking a cue from greeney, I will post this here.

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

It's a nice quote but I don't think every person rejoices in the death of Bin Laden for negative reasons. If a hugely destructive, evil person dies, is it so wrong to be glad they can't hurt anyone again?

It is not wrong to be glad, of course.
But he didn't have to die in order for he to not be able to hurt anyone again.
I just don't rejoice in the affairs of men who kill each other. Doesn't make it wrong for you to.

Well I would be naive to think otherwise.
The other sad reality is that most people don't respond to hatred with love.

Hell, I would feel privileged to be the one to get to take out that destructive force and bloody my hands in the process but that doesn't make it just.

edit: Apparently MLK isn't the one who said that.

What, and be a TERRORIST LOVER?

What is the appropriate response to an unreasonable, threatening, violent, demanding groups or individual?

It's all well and good to say love thy enemy but you can't bend over for people who want to destroy you, or what you value can you? So we're stuck.

Just? What would make it just? We're getting into a grey area here, I sense.

Aren't you the least bit glad he's gone?

And how do you know he didn't have to die?

I am usually very somber about these types of things.
Like, when someone gets the electric chair and people cheer outside the prison, I find that sort of bloodthirsty and tasteless.

But, I dunno..in this case..it feels more personal (9/11 affected my life in personal ways, I'd rather not go into..but it is worth mentioning because it may be relevent to how I feel)

I just find myself being really glad he's dead and also, that we didn't just find out he died, but that we found him, and we killed him (notice how I keep saying 'we'? I have, means it feels personal)

I can be a vengeful person..I don't want to be that way..it's just part of my nature..so that might have something to do with it in this case. I felt personally afflicted by that SOB, so much so, that I am personally glad he got what was coming to him.

The stuff he set into motion affected us all, the world, so much, it probably feels personal to just about everybody, especially in the USA

Aye, there's the rub. Most people who were only indirectly affected can't understand the feelings of those who were directly affected by the attacks, I think. I wasn't directly affected, but I still see his death as a good thing. I know that sounds cold but it's jsut the truth as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not even necessarily saying "love thy enemy," I just myself will not be rejoicing in the death toll rising. It's only going to continue to rise.

No. For one thing, he probably had a lot of valuable intel.

Glee certainly is understandable.

Glee, even if it's not right..
I enjoyed the show Glee..did you enjoy your pizza?

I didn't have glee over Obamas assassination..it was something else..not sure there is a word for it that I know..not glee..more along the lines of intense satisfaction

Did something happen I am unaware of?

Well whatever positive feelings you have, they are understandable.

I decided to have fish sticks instead. And I ate them with glee.
