Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced she will be attending international talks about Afghanistan to be held later this month.

Progress about the war in Afghanistan will be high on the agenda at the annual meeting of NATO to be held in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

Defence Minister Stephen Smith will also be attending the talks.

Ms Gillard has told Channel Nine she has decided it is important for her not to attend the discussions.

"In my view those talks are absolutely pivotal to the delivery of the agreed strategy in Afghanistan and to understanding the conditions which enable transition, which will guide what our forces do, and when our forces can start transitioning out," she said.
