I propose that it is not a calender at all, yes, you read that correctly.

I propose it is a long term count-down timer.

Mathematically, their calender is more accurate than what we use today.

Mathematically, there is no reason for it to stop.

When have you ever herd of a calender stopping????

What is this counting down to, good question.

I do think it must be very important, or why have a several thousand year count down to that date?

To begin with---it isn't exactly Mayan in origin. Secondly the "Long Count" calendar has ended before and what happened was that a new cycle started---which is what you would expect. In Mayan tradition the end of a cycle was a time of celebration...not doom and gloom. Effectively everyone attended "Happy New Cycle" parties and sang the Mayan equivalent of Auld Lang Syne.

And I wish people would spend five seconds studying the FACTS about the Meso-American Long Count Calendar before giving out with silly theories.

So far a Pre-Mayan culture in Chiapas. Its not surprising. People have been around for a long time on this planet, and they proabably started makings calender many millenia before any writing in some form or another, if I was to do a calender back then it'd probably be on a knotted or beaded cord based on lunar cycles with a 13 month year with 28 days a month with 4 weeks a month with 7 days a week plus a kind of leap year & special new years day. The whole Mayan doomsday thing is just a calender reboot after it goes out of whack so far.

That is some good information Aquatank but I still don't understand how
it is not actually the 'mayan' calender.
I'll start by looking up some information of the Chiapas.
Maybe Shadowcass has some more input on why it is not
Mayan in origin.

Well its not Mayan in the same way Italians aren't Imperial Romans or more importantly aren't Etruscans.

I don't pretend to understand the long count calender, 260 day years make no sense to me except they were looking at a pattern around them or cultural symbology that led to a belief in the importance of 260. Why do I say that? Because if we mark recuring rises and fall of the sun along the horizon we should mark 360 days between falling on the same initial spot twice, this means they were basing the calender on something other than the sun's movement.

Well I believe the end of this Month is the end of the 6th night. It goes into the seventh day, and there is no seventh night, correct?

On a regular I just pay attention to the 28 day cycles.
But you make an interesting point, how come it is 260 days?

I myself obviously do not know much about the Mayan Calender or
alot of the history behind it, but I know a small amount about
some of the dates and theories behind them. And I don't see any
of it as some dooms day crap. However I do believe there is
significance in it all.

Heres an explanation I found for 260 days. No arithmatic fractions meant whole days so to get it to work right they had look a more than one astronoimical cycle and lock them together according to this.
