Volleys a smash hit in New York City

From the soles of our tennis legends to the shelves of New York fashion, Australia's iconic Dunlop Volley has found a new calling.

The shoe, which peaked in popularity during the golden years of Australian tennis, is now being sold by trendy downtown retailer in New York and LA.

Steven Alan has been stocking the decades-old Volleys in six out of his nine stores since January and says they are a big hit.

"It's really about the design of the item," he said.

"It's just so well done. It's one of those things that is an instant classic. When you see it it just reads as iconic."

Mr Alan spotted the shoes on construction workers while visiting Australia last year.

"It's a good fit for us because we have our own line of clothing and it's very casual with a lot of washed cotton," he said.

"I just think it's a good fit and the people like them."

The Volleys sell for $US60 ($66) - more than twice their Aussie price - but Mr Alan says this is a bargain for US shoppers.

The inspiration for the Dunlop Volley came from Australian tennis legend Adrian Quist back in 1939 - ironically, while he was in the US.

Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard says Quist was competing at a tournament in Newport at the time.

"He went on a boat and noted the sort of shoes that they had on and thought the herringbone pattern used to get a good grip on a boat would work with tennis shoes," he said.

"He then convinced Dunlop to make what became the iconic Australian tennis shoe - every player wore it through the golden years of Australian tennis."

Mr Pollard says the shoe lost its dominance in the 1960s when hard courts came into existence.

"It was a sole that gave you a much better grip on grass and on clay, which were the main two surfaces in those days ... through the 50s and 60s," he said.

"It predates the Adidas and the Nikes ... the Nikes and the others only came in when tennis moved to hard court."

The Volleys, strictly a tennis shoe at the time, were taken over by other brands that focused on fashion and putting a wide range of products on the market.

Mr Pollard says it is great to see the iconic shoe making a revival.

"It's great news - always great to hear Australian success stories," he said.

Hate to burst you bubble rath, but the "guest" part apparently is a some program error affecting a few posters on the board, John is working on. It was not something he did to you, all of SWR names have swithed to Guest. A few other names have done the same, and reports of log in problems are coming in.

Other members are Both Their member names & Guests at the same time.

Most members have not been re named as guests .......

Some have been re-named as guests ......

& others are both guests & members at the same time. ???

ISP conflict ( two browser windows open at the same time & logged in as two different members.

John is working on the problem, but John has been working double shifts at his regular job all this week. I discussed this with him by phone, and he thinks it has something to do with not confirming email accounts when they registered. I'm not sure I understand it all, John will probably announce a solution when he gets to the bottom of the problem. Hopefully when he gets a minutes to do that. Its either some kind of glitch, or like most computers, its doing what it was told to do. Give a window to confirm, and if the window is exceeded, confimation expires. The results looks like a mass problem, but it may really be something simple in nature.

In the mean time anyone else having trouble, we are compiling names in our mod forum of who is affected. So far, SWR, Item 7, Frrostedman, Inja, Bionic, and Smokin Joe have problems. Some have the name changed to guest, and others just logging in problems. Not sure it they are related yet.

All part of my plan to get rath off the trail of my more favorable accounts.
