The Black Vault

Fort Mountain State Park, Georgia is located between Chatsworth and Ellijay on Fort Mountain. The mountain is named for an ancient 885 foot long rock wall located on the peak. The wall is thought to have been built by area Native Americans either for defense or for ancient ceremonies.Anthropologist and historians have stated that it is a Cherokee structure and the Cherokee nation has stated that the walls and tower were built by the moon eyed people who came from the sea. It is said that later the moon eyed people were killed off by the Cherokee.

Other historians have looked at the wall and tower structure and have said that it is of 12 century Welsh design. Many believe it is the home of Prince Madoc or Maddog of Wales who left his home to find a place for his people after the death of his father. He is believed to have traveled with a compliment of 200 men along with their families. Sailed to the gulf coast of Alabama-Florida traveled up river to build his kingdom in the hills between the Cherokee and Creek nations.

That's a pretty cool find! Should be interesting to see what else their investigation turns up.

That is the thing, from what I have read that stopped doing any investigation there many years ago. Now over the years the surrounding area including a few sites in alabama they have found the remnants of what looks like the foundation/base of another stone tower. But it is on private property only seen a picture of it.

Now the Etowah mounds, yes the American Indian mounds are north to northwest from fort mountain site. More can be seen at they do have a picture gallery down at bottom of the site page you will have to look for it.
