When does human life begin? Contemporary scientific literature proposes a variety of answers to the question of when human life begins, but science has yet to give a definitive answer to the question. I'm not so sure that even if science could give a definitive answer it would be accepted by the majority. The reason for this I think, is that we humans have different understandings or beliefs of what human life is. I think the majority of people define human life through their religious beliefs. Some by philosophical theories or beliefs, and some using biological scientific facts.
Those of religious faith will say that they believe in God and a soul and that the soul is created at conception. Life begins at conception. Some will say the soul is created at birth. Life begins at birth. There is no factual proof in these beliefs.
Those who use philosophy to define when life begins will say life begins when there is consciousness, brain function, movement, or a heartbeat. Though reasoning is used for these beliefs, they are only theories and cannot be scientifically proven.
Last, but not least, is using the scientific method to define when life begins. Some scientist will say life begins at conception. Some will say after the first twenty-four hours. Some say two weeks after fertilization...and so on.
This is a tough moral question with strong ramifications in the debate over abortion, embryonic stem cell research, cloning. What value do we put on human beings at the beginning of their lives, the beginning of life?
