Three Astronauts Charles Brubaker (James Brolin), Pete Willis (Sam Waterston), and John Walker (Wife Killer O.J. Simpson) are about to embark on the first manned mission to Mars when a NASA Dude opens the hatch on their Command Module and orders them out before liftoff....

They are taken to a warmed up Lear Jet and flown to a deserted USAAF Base where they are advised by Dr. James Kelloway (Hal Holbrook) a fatal flaw was discovered two months earlier by the Mission Specialists that would've killed them all in three weeks after liftoff....

Rather than abort the mission to fix the problem and face a Political Ass reaming by $$$$ cutting Congresscritters, they are advised to fake the Mars Mission or else....

The trio comply and just about the Mars Mission Sham is about to end the heat shield fails and the three realize they'd better make a break for it before they are eliminated to safeguard the coverup since they have been reported as dead....

CAPRICORN ONE was produced and finished in 1977 but released in 1978 after STAR WARS came out in order to capitalize on the Space Movie Craze....

70's faves Brenda Vaccaro, Karen Black, David Doyle, and James Sikking from Hill Street Blues are on hand as well and deliver great supporting performances...

However the main kudos goes to Elliot Gould as a kickass Invesitgative Reporter Robert Caufield who is tipped off about something wrong when a NASA Tech advises him the transmissions he's monitoring at Mission Control are only coming from 300 Miles Away instead of the vast distance of space....

When Caufield goes over to the mans apartment to speak further he finds out the Tech has disappeared and someone else is living there. As he leaves his car has been messed with and nearly dies in a fatal accident....

Later he is fired upon by a sniper and arrested in a Drug Bust set up by the sinister Fed Goons....

Kudos as well to Telly Savalas as the Profane and Freedom Outlaw Crop Duster Pilot who helps Caufield search for the Fugitive Astros and takes on two JBT Helicopters to stage a rescue mission....

CAPRICORN ONE recieved a lot of flak from NASA and its supporters for depicting the Space Agency being of the Watergate Mentality yet made a lot of people think when it came out in the late 1970's that certain questions needed to be answered about the Moon Landings and the possibility that they were faked....

Some of the best lines from CAPRICORN ONE include....

Dr. James Kelloway: You think it's all a couple of looney scientists, it's not! It's bigger. There are people out there, *forces* out there, who have a lot to lose. They're grown ups. It's gotten too big, it's in the hands of grown ups

Albain: My name is Al Baine. Now, I got a son. You know, the other A was for him but he don't like to fly. He became a lawyer. I think he's a pervert
Robert Caulfield: My name is Caulfield.
Albain: Hey, I can't help that.

Check out CAPRICORN ONE for some great conspiracy thrills !
