Through a FOIA request concerning NSA emails the following response was given: "There's no central method to search an email at this time with the way our records are set up, unfortunately," NSA Freedom of Information Act officer Cindy Blacker told me last week.

The system is “a little antiquated and archaic," she added.

It seems interesting that there are limitations, but again we only have their word for it.

That's surprising if it's true, as we have here at work a few methods of retrieving emails that are 8+ years old, and we're considered a small to medium organization (250 - 350 employees).

As for whether or not I believe it, I don't. With FOIA, one would think a federal agency would be one of the first places to comply with the law, though, this is the government we're talking about.
