If u got 24, then either you didn't divide into 48 or multiply by 12. There's one more step from the point of "24" either way.

I'm confident that I marginally understand the answer of 288, even though I got 2. 288 actually looks believable if you keep in mind that almost everything, according to mathematicians can be proven with numbers. just start messing with t hem and see what you get.

It's 288 if and only if you use the same convention that mathematicians use, which is twofold in this case:

1. Pemdas. Parentheses, exponentiation, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.
2. Division is defined to be multiplication by the reciprocal and subtraction is defined to be addition of the opposite.

Asked my son in law who is a math teacher and has a Masters in Math. This is what he said, even I said the answer was 2.

Answer =Two,

Order of operations problem(i.e. please excuse my dear aunt sally). Parenthesis work first(add), then multiply, then divide. You can multiply or divide in any order, but work in parenthesis takes precedence regardless of operation.

Hope this helps, often people play with these sorts of problems, so there may be some trick that they may say affects the answer.

48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(12) (Parentheses)
24(12) (Division)
288.

Well, following the logic of the Math teacher (I think), I got '0.5'

48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(12)
48÷24=0.5

Of course, that is what you get when you use a calculator and you enter it in that order (12*2÷48), to get to 2, you have to clear and swap the numbers. I like your way better, at1with0. It's easier for the non-math genius (like me) to understand. Yes I do need a calculator for math :crazy:

Even I know you are dividing by the product of the right side of the division sign. Dragoness, you have the last function backwards, 48 is divided by 24, not 48 into 24.

My son is law is right, the answer is 2.
