Fury over Venables’ plea to go free

CHILD killer Jon Venables is making a fresh plea for freedom — in an attempt to be released this summer.

Venables, 30, will appear before a Parole Board to claim he is no longer a danger and can be trusted to keep his false identity secret.

But the parents of two-year-old James Bulger — abducted, tortured and murdered in 1993 by the then ten-year-olds Venables and Robert Thompson — are disgusted that they are being forced to revisit the tragedy yet again.

A family friend said: “It is torture for them to go through this once again. They have to re-live every gory detail about what Venables did to little James.”

James’s dad Ralph and mum Denise have been asked to put forward objections to Venables’ release by January 20 — three weeks before the 20th anniversary of the crime. The friend added: “Ralph is furious Venables is even allowed to go before a parole board, especially at such a sensitive time.

“It is hard enough the family are dealing with such a landmark anniversary but to heap this on top is just insensitive. The thought Venables may be freed as they are struggling to cope with the memory of the murder is sickening.”

Venables and Thompson were jailed for life but freed on licence with new identities in 2001. But Venables’s parole was revoked and he was sent back to prison in 2010 after he was caught with child sex abuse images. He was sentenced to two years for downloading the pictures.

Home Office sources said Venables had little chance of re-release unless he convinced the board he could keep his true identity secret.

Denise is convinced he cannot do that because he revels in his infamy.

The friend added: “Venables is a deviant. Ralph believes he will kill another child in a sexually-motivated crime if freed.”
