Natural, integral, rational, real, complex, hyper natural, hyper integral, hyper rational, hyper real, hyper complex, surreal, ordinal, cardinal....

Numbers abound.

And why is .999repeating = 1?

I think we rode this merry-go-ground before! Rules of rounding prevails, defining what is practical or the application. .999=1 The fraction trick, and converting to decimals. What shell is the pea under!

The following two sequences are Cauchy equivalent:
{.9, .99, .999, .9999, .99999, .999999, etc.} and
{1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, etc.}

Meaning that .999repeating=1.

Let's start somewhere specifically
what is a real number? Did mankind create real numbers?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Created_the_Integers

God Created the Integers: The Mathematical Breakthroughs That Changed History is an anthology, edited by Stephen Hawking, of "excerpts from thirty-one of the most important works in the history of mathematics." The title of the book is a reference to a quotation attributed to mathematician Leopold Kronecker, who once wrote that "God made the integers; all else is the work of man."
