I guess Saakashvili's policy is missed on many Georgians, me too. But some recent events made me see things here quite clear. Now I am dead sure Saakashvili cares a sh-t about Georgia, its culture and its people! He's a mere political gambler, rather cynical I should say.
Quite recently the government of Abhazia has voiced its intention to start restoration works on Georgian religious and historical sites on the Abkhazian lands. As an experienced restorer I was invited by the Abkhazian side to take part. And I was already making some preparatory effort to join rather captivating and responsible job ...... when suddenly there came a phone call from the Georgian ministry of culture. They banned my participation saying I "mustn't help occupants"!! That was a real shock I should say! And it was even a bigger shock when some time later I happened to hear same Georgian official asserting it publicly that "Abkhazian separatists are set to eliminate completely traces of Georgian culture on the occupied territories"! In particular he meant Bedia monastery restoration works initiated by Abkhazia. Exactly there I had been offered to restore ancient frescos.
So it was then when I got the logic of the Saakashvili's posture. His line is just that. Let's have unique frescos in Georgian temples ruined to get the pretext of blaming "Abkhazian occupants" in barbarism and destroying Georgian culture. That's mere hypocrisy and nothing more, I say.
