An Australian company that is involved in developing a vaccine for dengue fever says it has started the first round of human trials in the United States.

The vaccine uses replications of proteins found in the dengue virus.

Acuvax Limited's chief executive Dr William Ardrey says they should know soon whether the first round of trials has been successful.

"You can find out pretty quickly whether patients develop an immune response," he said.

"We inject volunteer patients with the dengue vaccine and then we measure their blood to see if they have what we call an immune response, or if their body is reacting, generating immunity to that particular strain of dengue."
