A new range of super vegetables developed by Australian scientists at the CSIRO - The
Department of Primary Industries, Vilmorin Cie and Plant & Food Research, were launched today, claiming to have been scientifically proven to contain over 40% more anti-oxidants than regular varieties to help boost people's health.
Vital Vegetables, a world first, sees Booster Broccoli as the first in the new range of super vegetables that not only contains more active anti-oxidants than regular varieties, but also high levels of sulforaphane (SF), a naturally occurring, long-lasting antioxidant. Anti-oxidants as everyone knows, help reduce the risk of diseases like heart disease, certain cancers and obesity.
Jones, the leading scientist behind the initiative believes this is one of the most important developments in the fight against serious illnesses.
With around 60% Australians considered overweight or obese, 30% are bound to die from cardiovascular disease.
Vital Vegetables have not been genetically engineered or modified, but are grown naturally by Australian growers, using sustainable farming practices including minimal fertiliser and water. However, they cannot be considered organic as sometimes minimal amounts of pesticides are used for controlling pests.
Jones says it has taken nearly 10-years of natural breeding to create Vital Vegetables, which have been developed naturally on home soil, an innovation that will put Australia at the forefront of global horticultural development.;
