Elijah Wood to star in US pilot of Australian comedy Wilfred

LORD of the Rings star Elijah Wood has signed on to star in a US version of the Australian hit TV comedy series Wilfred.

Wood will star as nice guy Ryan who is attempting to woo the girl next door despite her mongrel dog, Wilfred, making it as difficult as possible for him.

The twist is that only Ryan can see Wilfred as a human in a dog costume.

Executive producer David Zuckerman has described Wilfred as "part Labrador retriever and part Russell Crowe on a bender".

The Australian version of the show, which was born out of a Tropfest film competition entry, was broadcast on SBS to much critical acclaim.

Australian Jason Gann will reprise his role as Wilfred in the show, which is set to begin filming in the coming months.

The role marks Wood's first foray into television.
